Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Web application help

The "client" is actually a family friend that works for a local "family support" company that has allowed me to create an application for them as a trial and learning experience to get use to/learn how to use alpha 5 for further development projects in my company.

No one has asked to write my application for me for free. I have put a lot of time, planning and development into this application so far and all I'm asking is help for parts I'm stuck on.

As a heavy internet forum user in general, my perception of a forum is that of a community that helps each other on a certain subject, in this case Alpha 5.

Never have I been questioned/complained against as I have now, and of all places the one that I had to purchase a product from.

If no one wants to help me with things when I get stuck then let me know now and I will move on to a product with a support base that is prepared to help.

Steve Wood has been very kind so far in helping me see a better way of accomplishing what I need from Alpha 5, and for that I'm greatful.

Sorry if I come accross harsh but I took offense from your comment: "I think those of us who help out on the board may get tired of writing your application for you (for free)".

I like using Alpha 5 and hope this isn't a start of a bad experience for any of us.

    Regards
    Dylan

      Re: Web application help

Your description changed my mind entirely. Now I see that you are new to Alpha and trying to learn by helping a friend create an ap that they probably couldn't afford otherwise. To me, that's a lot different than I sold an app but don't know how to do fairly basic things to create it (which was my initial impression.)

I support what you are really doing; most of us started that way. It grows the community and increases general knowledge of the Alpha product which is why we choose to help out here. (Some, like Steve, much more than others)

What I (mistakenly) thought you were doing usually ends in failure and gets blamed on the product, which then hurts the community and the product reputation.

      So, I'm sorry.

          Dylan,
Like Pat, I was starting to think the same thing until you clarified ....And just a minor point that may help you in understanding this forum
and of all places the one that I had to purchase a product from.
This is a completely user based/supported forum that only occaisionally sees anyone directly from Alpha so you may have purchased the product from Alpha but that has nothing to do with us at all! :)

          Above all....Have fun!!
          Mike

That happended once, happy user sent me two bottles of local Canadian Syrup, a Maple and a Blueberry. I horded them for my pancakes. It would be nice if this message board had a rating system or the ability to send Kudos or flag who 'solved' the problem. I've seen that in other forums. There is a lot of talent and experience up here but new users don't always know who knows what until the end of a long conversation. I also often get thanks that were intended for Workings, the other Steve, which I gladly accept on his behalf.

Would I have to make more than one table be part of each page's grid in order to achieve what I want?

                                Re: Web application help

To further my application, during the step by step process, I now need to add details to a different table called "child" and use the "session id" created by the dialog on page 1 to populate a field called "cross_ref" in the "child" table before it brings up the grid.

So after clicking next on the second page:

It will then populate the fields filled there (which it does already) and then populate the field "cross_ref" in the table "child" with the session variable. The reason it needs to do this after the "next" button is it will go to a third page to bring up the "child" grid filtered by the session variable. And it's used to link children's details to a client.

I also need to know if there is a way of populating a certain field with the user's name (I am using the built in security system)
