Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows 7 and a5v9

Have an application I developed for an organization. Am having, evidently, Windows 7 issues. The one I've been working with has just gotten a new laptop and it has Windows 7 Professional 64-bit processor. Have it set to run in Vista mode or xp mode. In running a script, it has the attached error. Had pointed her to the Microsoft site about running a computer in XP mode, but in running their tool to see if the computer has that capability, it says the computer doesn't have "Hardware-assited virtualization", and therefore can't run in XP mode.
Can anyone enlighten me on how to proceed? I don't have a need to purchase a new operating system, so maybe someone who has Windows 7 could point me in the right direction. I've looked at most of the posts about Windows 7 issues, but none seem to point to this issue.
    Thanks.

If you want to run in Virtual XP, you have to go to the Microsoft website and download Virtual Mode and XP. I wonder if that's what the problem is- it hasn't been downloaded and installed.

Since the laptop is new, the owner should have free tech support who is supposed to answer OS questions. I would have the owner contact tech support.

      Hi,
Just a thought, I have Windows 7, 64 bit and I'm having no problems with running any of my apps using either verion 9 or 10. I am not using vista or xp virtualized stuff. Maybe try running without using those things.

        Re: Windows 7 and a5v9

We have researched the Virtual stuff. It is really not necessary because v9 and v10 will run on a Windows 7 operating system as witnessed by many users. This problem must have something to do with a setting or a conflict with another running program.
I have sent the app to Ted Berry, who mentioned in another thread that he had all versions of Windows 7. He has graciously agreed to do some testing for me.
FWIW, the virtual thing being able to be used depends on your processor. Only a few seem to support "Virtual PC" operations. My users new laptop doesn't so therefore, this is not an option.
I read in another post here (haven't been able to find it again) that the operating systems supported by a5 is hard coded into the program. By using the "Compatibility" option on startup, I think it just lies to a5 and tells it that the operating system is whatever you choose there, either XP SP3 or Vista. Not really sure if that is what it means or not. Just a guess.
        I'm still open to suggestions.

I went to microsoft home website and typed in hardware-assisted virtualization. There are a number of papers on this. One of them said that this was implemented in Xeon machines 4 years ago. In another, I found this- http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb740944.aspx. Worth taking a look at.

I set up virtual PC 2007 on my 64 bit Vista machine. After I installed it, I launched it (note that I don't have an operating system to install on it) and selected properties. One of the properties is hardware-assisted virtualizion. I couldn't switch it on because it said my machine didn't support it.

As I mentioned before, Microsoft software problems on a machine are supposed to be answered by the tech support from which you bought the computer and I would call them. They may know about the problem.

            Robert,
The Microsoft site has a tool you can run to see if your computer supports Virtualization. As I said, only a few processors support it. But I don't feel this is needed as far as Alpha5 is concerned.
