Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error Message "Enter must begin first"

I was entering data into a table, the only table in a new database - clearly hit some strange button because now I get "Enter must begin first" and the table locks.. I have tried to get out without saving the current record - and get the message. I cannot even close the database. I tried duplicating the file and creating a browse attached to the new version - but evidently the error was entered. Has anyone a clue as to what the problem is - and better yet, how to fix it. I really do not want to repeat the work. There are no scripts or anything fancy involved (or none that I have created) and I am at record number 234. In other words, it has been working. Mary

Re: Error Message "Enter must begin first"

Mary, welcome to the message board. I'm sorry you're having trouble. Here are a couple of ideas for you:

    a) scroll to the bottom of this web page and check the list of "similar" message board threads. This list is made automatically based on key terms in your "subject line" for this thread.

    b) try searching for "enter must begin first" to see other discussions on this. Use quotes in the search string.

    c) zip a copy of your entire database and attach it to a post in this thread. We can then check it for you. To do this begin a quick reply in the usual way, then use the "Go Advanced" button to open a more robust editor for your reply, scroll down to "Manage Attachments", upload your attachment from there, and submit your reply. Easier to do than to describe.

Re: Error Message "Enter must begin first"

Thank you. I had searched the FAQ, but not the message board. Next time I shall do that first. I "solved" the problem by exporting to Excel then importing, a solution that worked because the table was all that I had. I think that the problem was accidentally moving to an up-arrow key and therefore creating a situation that looked as if I was working on an old record before closing out a new record - and then running into the CanSaveRecord problem described in one of the other responses. That seems the most similar situation. For now, I am going to remember that there are answers to this problem on the message board, that there is a work around if one there is only one table to worry about, and that one can find solutions on the message board that are not in FAQ,and that I should really try to learn more about the coding behind what I do. THANK YOU for the very rapid and helpful response.
      Mary
