Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5V8 to A5V10 Data Entry Question

I just upgraded from V8 to V10 and am runni9ng Windows Home Premium V7.

I opened a database that had been created with v8 and am able to edit field rules, add fields, edit form layout, etc. However, when I go to enter data into a new record, the text appears in the field window until I tab out to the next field. (I have checked to see if it is there using browse after saving the record - the fields are blank).

Is there some step in the upgrade process that I have neglected to do or is there something else I have done incorrectly?

    Thanks,

    Mike

This sounds familiar. Suggest you search for other message board threads discussing fields going blank during data entry.

If possible, consider zipping a copy of the database and attaching it to a post here so we can run it on our machines. Might give us some clues that explain what's happening.

      Thanks Tom -

The interesting thing is that the records entered in A5v8 are there and searchable, etc. It is just when I try to enter a record in A5v10 that it won't accept the data. The Db is a stand-alone and I have created another Db in the same "group" that will accept data in all the fields.

When I first ran v10 it asked if I wanted to run databases created with earlier versions of Alpha and I selected "Yes". Now I can find no reference to that procedure. Is it possible that it may have some effect on this problem?

      Thanks, M

I think what you are referring to is when you first installed v10, it asks if you want to carry over the recent database list from your previous version.

This just populates the recent database list in the startup box.

Mike, it's possible I suppose that vers 10 is mishandling the vers 8 data entry form somehow. One way to test this is to go to the control panel and open the default form for the table or set that supports the data entry form. Do this by right clicking the table or set name and choosing the option to open the default form. Once Alpha builds that form for you use it to enter a couple of dummy records. Do the the field values stick? Will the records save ok? If so, that's a pretty good indicator the problem lies in the vers 8 data entry form.

Thanks, that's what I thought it was but I wasn't sure.

That didn't work either. I have gone ahead and created a new Db in A5v10 and it works fine (go figure). I imported the data from the one that did not work and it works just fine also. I just hate tom think of doing this for all my work.

              Thanks again, M

Re: A5V8 to A5V10 Data Entry Question

I am not a programer, but like yourself I upgraded my computer to a 64 bit computer, and then upgraded from A5v8 to A5v10. I noted a couple problems with databases originally created in v8 and transfered to v10 on the new compter. I was able to note two problems (there may have been more). Needless to say by examining the system processes running, and ultimately deleting a couple non-essential programs, the erratic behavior I was experiencing disappeared. You can check my post from a couple weeks ago titled "Odd Behavior With Windows 7 (I Think) for the full post.

Although I did not have your specific problem (at least to my knowledge), I was able to correct the problems I was aware of by deleting a Wacom Digital tablet program. Have had no problems with A5v10 since.

This may not be a solution to your problem, but might be worth looking into.
