Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    V10 Install Maker and Supercontrols

    Hello to all,

I've created several forms that use the new supercontrol for alphabetic sort. Locally, it works quite nice if you don't use legacy stylesheets; if you do, it will pose problems - the solution can be found in other parts of the forum.

When Install Maker completed the "setup.exe" file and I installed it on another system, I found that control did not work. In fact, the control was replaced by a rectangle, slightly grayed.

I am assuming that some file is missing in the setup.exe package that was created by Install Maker. Either that or something is not registering properly.

If it is the case that it's a file that is missing, does anyone have a list of the supercontrol files (and the corresponding supercontrol name) that needs to be included to make Install Maker create a correct setup.exe?

    Thanks for any feedback.

    Wayne

Re: V10 Install Maker and Supercontrols - Update

    Supercontrol works...

    Background:

The system I installed V10 on had a runtime V9 with the application already installed.

In Install Maker, I had the setting to update the application only and then set the install to a different directory, assuming that Alpha would know things were different and should use the newer version. A mistake.

Running the app gave the same old screens without the newer version. There was a startup screen for that version. When I closed this screen, consequently ending the program, the Alpha runtime showed a menu, from which I chose Recent Databases. There I found the newer version which did work but had the problem mentioned in the previous post.

I deleted all the files on this system that alpha created and then used Install Maker to do Both in step 1.

When I ran the setup.exe on the test system, the super control appeared and is functioning properly.

    Questions

Obviously, there is a need to test versions of what appears on the end user system, both for the developmental software and the runtime.

Are there any checking routines in Alpha to test versions and inform the end user that the software may not work properly with the current runtime version? I guess this would be paramount to what Alpha already has available in their "check for updates." I could not find any info but that does not mean it does not exist.

      Hi Wayne,

Check out the version() function in the help files. You can use it to get to where you want to be.

Re: V10 Install Maker and Supercontrols

        Hi Bob,

        Thanks for the feedback.

I would tend to think that this sort of thing would or should be taken care of internally by Alpha 5, relieving the developer of one more thing to watch out for.

In general, the learning curve for setting up tables, forms, reports, etc is short but when you first learn something, it becomes rather frustrating to all of a sudden realize that something is not working the intended way - simply because there is some check that needed to be employed or whatever. This adds to the development time for completion of a project.

Then there is the question, how many of these types of things does one need to watch out for? Is there some general algorithm that developers should use in all this? If not, maybe there should be?

        Again, thanks for the feedback.
