Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Close modal-popup grid

    I need to close it on Submit.

    FWIW: There is a built in checkbox for the detail section to close, as well as a corresponding JS command to do the same. But I want to close the popup grid.

    There is mention of this in the helpfile using javascript closeLastOpenedA5Window() and similar commands although this does not appear to work with some grids.
    It is within section Grid Component How to topics - How to Close a Pop-up Ajax Window

      From the notes on Build 2607-3506 11/30/2009

      Grid Component - New Javascript Functions to Close Pop-up Ajax Windows - The Grid component allows you to create pop-up windows that display other content (such as Grids, Reports and .a5w pages). Two new Javascript commands have been added that allow you to programmatically close these windows:
      closeParentA5Window(ele)
      closeLastOpenedA5Window()

      The closeParentA5Window() function takes 'ele' - the id of any element in the window. For example if you have a button in the html that is shown in the window you could write:

      <button id="mybutton" onClick="closeParentA5Window(this)">Close this popup window</button>

      The closeLastOpenedA5Window() takes no arguments and closes the most recently opened popup window.

        Are these JavaScript commands or xbasic commands? Seem like xbasic to me. I can't get them to work. I want them in the grid's AfterInsertRecord event. Here are a couple of permutations I have tried w/o success:

        closeParentA5Window(this) 'this actually does close the grid, but leaves a window open w. an error message.

        e.javascript = "closeParentA5Window(this)" 'this one does nothing

        Tried some other variations w. no luck.

          It's Javascript and they do work.

          You don't want to use the server side AfterInsertRecord event here.

          You need to use one of the available Javascript Events.

          Go to Properties | Javascript | System Events and add

          Code:
          closeParentA5Window(this);
          to either the afterRowSubmit or afterGridSubmit event.

          That should do it.

            They are Javsacript commands.
            To use the AfterInsertRecord server event you can use the ajax response
            e.g.

            aa = e.rtc.A_AjaxResponses
            aa[].text = "closeLastOpenedA5Window();"
            aa[..].id = 100
            aa[].text = "alert('Record inserted');"
            aa[..].id = 101

            As mentioned above sometimes you need to use one of the other commands and specify the window id.

                Sadly, it doesn't work. Tried it in both events. Tried it both as a modal popup and a modeless popup. Tried popup both from detail view (where I want it) and from the grid itself. The afterGridSubmit yields an error messgae "object does not support..." and the afterRowSumit is silent but doesn't close the popup.

                  You know what - It think that should be a standard function - I think Selwyn would be receptive to the autoclose on submit request (for Ajax windows) as a simple tick box option in the popup control. Ask him.

                      Re: Close modal-popup grid

                      OK I finally put together a real test case and this works.

                      I'm assuming that you want to call a grid in a Javascript modal popup to add one record to a table, initiated from a button click in a parent grid. Once the record is submitted, that you want to close the Javascript modal popup window automatically.

                      So in order to do this you cannot use
                      closeParentA5Window(this); because (this) will refer to the grid and not the Javascript window.

                      I added a button to what becomes the parent grid and then added Action Javascript to the button on click event to display a grid to add a record. Next I dispayed the grid in Firefox and used Firebug to look at the element name of the modal Javascript Window, which in my case was A5dlg1. Then I edited the child grid and added :

                      closeParentA5Window('A5dlg1'); to the afterGridSubmit event, which is a client side Javascript event.

                      That did it.

                        That makes sense. Firebug is another matter altogether. I was looking for a Firebug for Dummies book, but no such luck. I think Firebug requires a separate degree program. So, where do I find the window name?

                          OK, I figured it out - A5dlg6. Of course, I only figured it out thanks to your post. So I assume that A5dlg6 will walways be the name? I wonder where does that get assigned? By Alpha when you save the component, or at runtime? Anyway, it works. Onward!

                          And thanks again.
