Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Running A5V9 and A5V10 on Same Machine

I presenty have a working database in A5V9
I purchased A5V10 and wanted to use the A5V9 as my working database and use A5V10 to work with the new features and learn more.
What I did: I "zipped" the A5V9 (all files) and "Unzipped" them into A5V10
Trouble is: Anything I change in A5V10 IS ALSO changed in A5V9, which I didn't want to happen.
    This is the file setup:
Under "Program Files" I have Alpha5V9 and subfolder called "ACTS" and under "Acts" I created a subfolder called "Save" -- ALSO
Under "Program Files" I have ALPHA5V10 and subfolder called "Acts" and
under that "Acts" I created a subfolder called "Save"
After I installed A5V10 in it's own folder, I now have these files in A5V9 that where NOT there before I installed A5V10
Under A5v9 - Subfolder "Acts" New Subfolder called "Backup" - Under that folder are subfolders "Sets", "Tables" and "Jobcosting_History"
In Folder A5V9 that database name is "JOBCOSTING" and I have the following extentions: All start with JOBCOSTING -- .ADB, ALB, ALX, MUF, Recent_Files, Database_Explorer, Backup Log.TXT and .startup
Under A5V10 I only have these "Jobcosting" extensions .ALB, ALM, ALX
Question: What have I done wrong?
Question: How can I get the "Jobcosting" database from V9 and into V10 WITHOUT V9 being changed by anything I do in V10
Thanks for any help, I'm not a programer, everything I have done is with Action Scripting, CHUCK

Why did you unzip v9 into v10? Naturally this screws everything up. Do the following:
    • Uninstall v9 and v10 both.
    • Reinstall v9 into the default v9 folder.
    • Install the last v9 patch.
    • ReInstall v10 into its default folder.
    • Install v10 patch Build 2649_3513 (not 3514 or 3515 = appear to be buggy)
Now you should have 2 separate folder sets w. 2 operational versions of Alpha.

"Install" your application in a new folder such as C:\data\MyAppName

If you want to experiment on your application independently with both versions, create a separate subfolder such as: C:\data\MyAppName_v10 - and copy your application files to it, as well.

Now you should have 2 duplicate copies of your app in 2 unique folders.
    • Run v9 and navigate to C:\data\MyAppName and open the application.
    • Create a shortcut from the controlpanel/tools/shortcut menu.
    • Make sure that the shortcut name includes "v9" in it somewhere.
    Then...
    • Run v10 and navigate to C:\data\MyAppName_v10 and open the application.
    • Create a shortcut from the controlpanel/tools/shortcut menu.
    • Make sure that the shortcut name includes "v10" in it somewhere.
Now you should have 2 shortcuts on yoru desktop - one that opens v9 and the v9 app, the other opens v10 and the v10 app.

DO NOT create separate folders for sets, tables etc. Each application should be entirely in one folder ONLY! OR ELSE!!!!!!
