Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    sql, MySql, dbf data sources

I know there are some real professionals on this board that know a5 inside and out. I would like to have your thoughts.

    Data Source of choice:
    When the priority is
    1) performance

    2) functionality

    3) ease of use

I think there are many of us who would appreciate your comments.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Re: sql, MySql, dbf data sources

Bill - this is really a variation on previous discussions. Much of the answer depends on what you're doing with your app.

My own preference is to keep everything all-Alpha, using .dbf tables. Built correctly you don't have performance problems.

Other backends, like SQL, might be appropriate for you if they have a strong point that you need, such as large, extensive or complicated queries.

It would help to know a little about your app.

Hi I personally use Mysql backend and find the speed is at minimum 20 times faster then using dbf's. If you would like to see it working live and in color send me a PM and I will let you have a look at a live system with 200k records and lots of fields with drilldowns and rowexpanders for example. And why not use Mysql its free!

Hello Steve, thanks for the reply. I could not find those previous threads on this subject. I knew they had to be out there but I could not locate them using the search utility.

This was a general question for consideration of future apps. Currently I'm working on a conversion of a 'members only' website that uses Access as the backend and it has to stay Access at least until I convert other applications that connect to this data.

        Any further comments are welcomed,
        Bill

          Hello Chad,

That sounds interesting. Why would you chose MySql over MS Sql Express, which is also free? It has like a 4 gig limit. Not too many small or even medium sized businesses would go over that limit. Not pushing MS Sql just curious of your reasons for making that choice.

          Thanks,
          Bill

I just found it way easier to deal with. I had express first but later moved to mysql. I also have a very neat program for building views and queries. I will show it to you online.

Bill, I have the product PHPMaker v6 and it works well with building php against mysql datasources.

Thanks George, I'm surprised they let 'PHP' be displayed on this web site. Yes, I have seen PHP and MySql. very fast, but PHP is not that easy to learn, sooo, we turn to alpha5.

Re: sql, MySql, dbf data sources

I didn't expect to like SQL Server 2008. I have a fundamental distrust of Microsoft and it's bloated software however, I'm really impressed with SQL Server 2008. Performance is awesome, it works very well with V10 and the management tools are excellent. The only hassle is the installation which always takes a few hours when you load all the updates.

MySql's installation is MUCH faster and less painful and it's performance and management tools are also pretty damn good. I'm just worried what Oracle is going to do with it.

In any case, IMHO it makes more sense to go with SQL over Alpha's Dbf database for many reasons. These include performance, scalability, model code isolation, programability and easy accessability to other server technologies including all major server side development technologies.

I am curious about Chad's "very neat program for building views and queries" as well as George's PHP maker. And in context to Steve Working's (who seems to be well known on this message board) statement that he likes to keep everything Alpha .. why would you use these other tools?

I see an older thread has re-surfaced, and my name has been invoked.

Re: SQL vs. DBF, I have now seen the light, and for reasons including those listed by Bob Moore, am now starting each new project with some SQL back end.

                        Bob,

I agree, MS SQL is great and with the 2008R2 version installation is no longer a typical MS nightmare + the 4 Gb limit is now lifted to 10 Gb. MySQL is not a typical Windows app so when you're looking to work for SME's chances are that you'll find more existing MS SQL then MYSQL to talk to.
