Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    e-commerce application

I am now at the point where I need to add a shopping cart to my website. Some time ago I purchased AlphaSportsWebV8 and I have today had a look at it. It looks OK but I'm not sure if I have the ability to integrate it into my website.

Should I try and do just that, or should I simply write my own cart?

    Kind regards
    Larry Gordon
PS To anyone loading the above application for the first time, take special note of where it gets installed to - or you will never find it!

    Re: e-commerce application

    Larry,

I'm currently going through adapting the AlphaSportsWeb app for a client. It all depends on how closely your situation mirrors the AlphaSports design.

Is your company named AlphaSports? If not, you will need to replace the graphics in the app with your own. Make sure they are the same size. You will have to put the same photos on every page, or rewrite the page header for each page.

Are you happy with one of the provided color schemes? If not, you will find the CSS a very complex mixture of tables and divs. I ended up completely rewriting the CSS to make it smaller and to accomodate a few changes that I needed. That also meant making changes to every public page.

Can you use the product tables that come with the app, perhaps by adding fields? My customer had tables that were already used for other purposes, so I had to recreate the product grids.

Do you have photos of your products? The app is designed to use photos of the product. If you don't have them, you'll need to change the product grid or it will look strange.

Do you have multiples of the same product to sell from stock? My customer sells unique items, but the "add to cart" first asks for quantity. For my client, there is only one, so asking for quantity could be a problem. However, the entire shopping cart is written in JavaScript, so if you are not adept at Javascript, this could be a problem.

Do you have a reasonable number of product categories? If not, the category list (lower left) will need to be changed. This is not a component but is html/Xbasic assembled line by line for this purpose and will need to be modified and copied to each public page.

So, it is not a project for a newbee, but if your product matches the AlphaSportsWeb concept closely, then it could work for you.

      Re: e-commerce application

      Pat,
Thanks for the in depth feedback. I have taken your advice and am attempting to construct it from scratch. I have a third party credit card URL to send my transactions to, so I just need to get the cart working...
      Kind regards
      Larry
