Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error opening grid table/view: Maximum session: open tables exceeded

I am starting to have a problem with this message popping up on a regular basis and preventing users from using my web applications, and I'm wondering if anyone else is having the same problem?

I found a year old thread that talks about the same thing, and states that the maximum number of open tables is 100, but I'm almost sure I don't have 100 tables open at once (I have very few users signed on to the system at any one time), and the year old thread really doesn't list a solution.

    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...d+table%2Fview

I was under the impression that when a grid is accessed the table is opened, then closed, so I can't imagine why I would have 100 "unclosed" tables hanging around in my applications.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Yes I am seeing this too. The difference in my case is that I am using a desktop application as opposed to a web application. Likewise, I have very few concurrent users. There are only 5 maximum users at any point in time, and typically there are only 3. I've had it occur when there are only one.

The only way I can seem to clear the error is to close Alpha (or the runtime) and then reopen. It is happening several times a day.

I'm still using V9 as I haven't had time to evaluate if V10 fixed all the problems I've had with V9.

If you find anything out, I'd appreciate you sharing, and I'll do the same.

Rich I think this may have something to do with sessions expiration. Maybe change the time and give that a go.

On your response to Rich, any chance you could elaborate further on exactly how do do that as I am having the same exact problem? Thanks!

Unfortunately my application server's session lifetime is already set to 900 seconds.

It's still happening, and it is a pain because if I am not in a position to log in remotely and shut down A5, my users are esentially locked out until the program has been reset.

Ok that setting is obviously 30 minutes do they need to be in that long?

Rich are you using dbf tables?

              Do you have Dialogs?

Re: Error opening grid table/view: Maximum session: open tables exceeded

Yes that's all I use is dbf tables, and yes I do have some dialogs, but mainly this message pops up when the linked grids are being used.

It should be noted that I never had this problem with the old tabbed grid linker system in V9 (of course it was slow as heck), but since I upgraded to V10 and all I use is linked grids, I'm getting this error message on a regular basis.

V10 is great and the linked grids "fly" compared to the V9 grids, but I really need to find out why this message keeps popping up.

                I'm open to any suggestions!

Re: Error opening grid table/view: Maximum session: open tables exceeded

I asked about the dialogs because they dont close tables automatically like grids however maybe there is something about grid linkers that have been missed and leaving the tables open.

And the reason I had asked in regards to dbf is that the limit on sql is 1048 which I would have a hard time beleiving that you were maxing that out.

Maybe fire a bug off to Selwyn, I am not sure but maybe there is something to it.

Sorry nothing else that I can think of that would help.

                    Interesting about the dialogs.

Okay, I'll try to get a bug report to Selwyn a soon as I get a minute.

I have another small issue to report to him which is related to linked grids as well, and I don't want to pile too many reports on him at once.

                    Thanks for the input.
