Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Move from SQL Express 2008 to SQL Standard, Can't INSERT new records now

Move from SQL Express 2008 to SQL Standard, Can't INSERT new records now

Stumped . . . I move my existing (working) A10 application from one server running SQL Express 2008 to a new server running SQL Standard 2008.

I can INSERT new records from Management Studio (as well as update, etc.) but when I try to create any new record from the web running A10 (for any table) I get an "Identity_Insert is set to OFF" error, which implies that when I create a new record with Alpha, Alpha is trying to set the record ID, which it is not nor have I changed anything from last week when it was all working just fine. I can UPDATE records, view, sort, etc from Alpha, just can't INSERT.

I would think it has to be some setting on SQL Standard that I am missing?? (I do have the "Prevent saving changes that requires table re-creation" unchecked as well)

Any SQL exprerts out there that may have an idea? Thanks!

I use the Enterprise edition, but here are two ideas:

In your Alpha code, directly before your row insert, issue:
    SET IDENTITY_INSERT {TableName} ON
then execute your row insert. Follow your row insert with:
    SET IDENTITY_INSERT {TableName} OFF

Alternatively, and perhaps not the wisest solution:
(also, I'm not sure this option is available in Standard; nor am I certain at what product version level this configuration option first became available)

Open your SQL Manager, locate and check:
Enable Identity Insert property in the Column Mappings and Data Transformations

Did you check the table strucure that auto increment for that table is set Indentity seed is on? other tables work normal with auto increment?

Re: Move from SQL Express 2008 to SQL Standard, Can't INSERT new records now

As it often is with these type of "mysterious" problems . . . user error!

The problem appears to have been with having the primary auto sql incrementing field being used in an Alpha grid (hidden) with the "Update Settings" as "updatable".

On one hand that does make sense as you can't update a calculated auto incrementing field in SQL - even though I was not doing any updated to that field. But what remains very confusing to me is that everything was working just fine over a week ago and I have many tables. Upon checking, some did have the auto incrementing field checked as updatable and others did not . . so not sure why it started to spew errors or if something changed upon moving servers and server software . . . but after spending almost a week on the this problem, re-creating several of my sql tables, the solution was simply checking a single check box on the Alpha field property box for that field to be non updatable!

I hope someone else will learn from this one as well.

You are not alone mike Im having that same problem

I set all "identity" fields in the sql table to "no", but I now get an error saying something about "Link Fileds are NOT updatable" even tough im not updating any link field and was working a few weeks ago

this is happening all over my app
using sql server 2008 on windows 7 home edition
          Cheers

I disabled the updatable feature on all of my primary keys as well. Many other development application do this by default. I have not had an errors yet, but i am going to reset them to updateable as i might someday upgrade to sql standard. I guess it can't hurt. SQL controls the value of this field.

Guys have any of you looked at a possible security setting that was missed, on the change to server SQL?
