Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    VPS verson my own server

I do this stuff in my spare time, which is limited. For over a year, I have been trying to get things to post and to run smoothly on a VPS, but am basically dead in the water - the learning curve is too steep or I haven't found the right instructions. I keep running into problems with the application finding different files and with running operations (such as field updates and appends) on the VPS.

I am now considering getting my own server, sitting right here connected to my desktop. If I did that, would things run on it as smoothly as they do on the local host (which works fine for me)? If so, then how do I set it up for other people to log into it through the internet?

I don't think the problem you are describing has to do with a VPS. Are you using appropriate path aliases?

I also don't understand your problem(s). But a VPS is exactly the same as a dedicated server in terms of what you have to do to set it up, publish, etc. Do you have a Web Application Server license?

Re: VPS verson my own server

I have been through the path aliases stuff many times, with Steve, among others, trying to help me. I have set things up exactly as people say, but the program does not recognize some of the paths. Clive, on whose VPS I am working, has tried, too. I think the problems is that alpha is not longer really intended for amateurs such as myself. There are apparently some subtle issues which you pros are assuming I understand and I don't. The biggest problem of all is the the help documentation has desktop and web stuff all jumbled together, and none of it is written for someone not well versed in programming languages.

          Hi Conrad,

I too am fairly new to the web side of Alpha and I can empathise with your sentiment. However, I have fought my way to hosting my own Alpha website and have tediously overcome the DNS and MX and SBS challenges - to name but a few. My website is largely 'static' and I am now about to start adding some serious data grids to it - except I cannot get the required guidance from the Help file or videos that I have.

I do believe that there is a killing to be made by someone who can offer immediate help on newbie queries via phone or email, obviously at a price. I am not talking about 'blocks' of time, just simple queries where the answers would be second nature to the experts.

By way of example, my current query is that I have created a Tabular grid with a few fields and also a Columnar grid with many fields from the same table. I simply want to click on a record in the Tabular grid and have the corresponding record appear in the Columnar grid - I don't care whether it's on the same page or a new one. I then want to display child records accordingly - I think the latter will be simple via Grid Linker - but I can't find any guidance on the first hurdle. I have done this a million times in desktop apps, but am struggling in the WAS environment.

          Regards
          Larry

I provide that service. One problem is that about half the questions I answer in a few minutes and the other half become much more involved and require login, testing, taking files, etc.
