Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Soon 32-bit is garbage

There in no sense to develop anything new 32-bit programs anymore. 32-bits markets will disappear rapidly. Windows 7 will totally chance the markets. 16-bit is gone and so will 32-bit be soon.

When a company invests to new Windows 7(and they will)they for sure choose 64-bit platform because there is the future. Microsoft has also announced that there will be 64-bit Office 2010 immediately available when new Office 2010 arrives. This is the key moment for the change in company's.

32-bit is not a selling argument in 64-bit systems. You don't want to install 32-bit program to the 64-bit system because you know there will be issues. You can see it already. If you buy a new 64-bit computer you will seek 64-bit programs. If a firm is using 64-bit Office and all the driver are 64-bit , do you really thing you can sell them a 32-bit program made with Alpha.
    Servers will be 64-bits too.

The Alpha version 10 is terrible strategy mistake from Alpha. If we would now have a 64-bit version of Alpha we would be in a very good position. We could really have a selling argument!

The Alpha version 10 is useless. The life cycle will be so short that it is wast of time to develop with it.
The next version 11 is crucial. If it is again 32-bit version we developers and Alpha are out of business.

Since there is almost a year after last update to version 9, I think Alpha is anytime ending version 10 development and focusing to version 11. I hope they now will make right decisions.

If you are just an ordinary user using Alpa for hobby just relax, there is nothing to worry. You can use Alpha (32-bit) as before also in 64-bit systems. It maybe works maybe not. But if you are a developer I would be very worried..

Heavy post!, are there any 64 bits were you live?
I don't think this is the way to post here on the board

Discussion is fine but remember most of us are professional developers.

      Ken

I respectfully disagree! Very few clients in my vicinity have even thought about 64 bit pc's yet. Maybe that is because of the market I am in, namely SOHO and SME's. Businesses which are not/do not need to immediately re-invest in the latest technology. They have business needs which are being met by their current technology and have no need or desire to spend extra money to upgrade equipment or software to get something which will end up doing exactly what their current equipment is already doing!

I have clients still using Office 2000 because it works for them. Although I don't have any, I know there are many businesses still using Alpha FOUR! and why not.

What it seems you are basically saying is ditch 32 bit architecture for 64 bit. Now if Alpha did that then it really would be commercial suicide!

Somewhere down the road sure, most will be working in 64bit but even then there will still be some using dos based programmes! Even then there will be people still using windows 98!

For most businesses I deal with there would have to be some massively compelling reasons to upgrade their current hardware and software. The return on investment numbers just don't stack up. Maybe you deal with larger corporations where the ROI can be more easily justified? Not me! Not Yet!

      Kind regards

        Totally agree with Glen.

Companies dont upgrade their hardware/software just because if there is a newer version availabe...it just doesnt make any sense.

But of course...things will change, but defn not rapidly...maybe in 5 years or so ....who knows

I'm a testing consultant to major blue chips. GE - Pearson - most UK banks and some smaller companies. I use Alpha where I can as a test harness/tool.
I wish it were the case, more work for me testing new systems.

            However.

They all have the same basic priniciple:-
"If it aint broke don't fix it".

In most cases there has to be some benefit to the business and that is usually a financial benefit or there are regulatory requirements in the banking industry, an upgrade to 64 bit is not going to be one of them in the foreseable future.

            Only my opinion though.

I remember hearing at the last training that 64 bit and .net were important and so I assume those are in the works 3 to 5 years out. I think a bigger nut to crack is one of industry standards. If 100 million are using Alpha to develop applications, then everything in the software is a standard. If a hundred of us are building something fancy with a grid, or one or two of us are building some ultra unique model within Alpha, well then that goes when we do.

Alpha will be 64 bits when it needs to be 64 bits

I dont have any clients asking: "Is the web server 64 bits?" I dont think they even know what is the difference, but when the time come alpha will make the change, they obviously want to keep their product competitive, I dont think 64 bitage is real commercial issue right now so Chill Out my friend.

I would set support for multiple processors with a higher priority than bitage.
                      Cheers
