Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is Alpha web component not show a GB pound sign?

    Hello
I created a grid with a text field and a text Area with an adb file and notice that if I enter a (pound) sign A5 V10 shows this a

I tried this on a new basic test site with the same result.
I tried amending the page to include UTF-8
    <!doctype html public "-//w3c//dtd html 4.01 transitional//en" "http://www.w3.org/tr/html4/loose.dtd">
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"/> but with no success.
I did email Selwyn twice asking what to do but have had no response yet.
I have been told on this forum I should use Mysql as the way of overcoming the problem and I am learning Mysql now but find it hard to accept that A5 and adb cannot display the . I can enter a dollar OK.
Can anyone suggest what else to do please?
    Thanks
    John

Re: Is Alpha web component not show a GB pound sign?

Just cut/paste the character in from Word or notepad (or this message!) .. that will work assuming you are using a font that includes the sign in the ASCII character set. True UTF8 characters are a different story within the grid fields. I recently had to work with the Nigerian Naira symbol on a project and I had to use Javascript to add the Naira symbol to the grid fields.

          Thanks Bob,
Interesting idea but I doubt I could sell that to many customers!

I have now found I can use the sign with Mysql but cannot use the sign with the Alpha Database.

If you'll explain a little bit more with some context or code perhaps someone would have a solution. I don't know what you're doing or how you're trying to use it so I can't make a suggestion.

                        John,

This doesn't solve your original question for TextArea but for normal number fields (Control Type - TextBox) the following display format works in showing the sign

                        alltrim(""+str(<value>,250,0,","))

                        David.

Thanks Steve for your further comment.
Forgive me if I misunderstand your comment, but I thought I have explained the problem very fully in the first message #1.

Its just A5 V10 using the ADB seems unable to show a sign in a text box, which is a big problem in the UK. Can anyone get the sign to show in a text box, area, in A5 V10? A5 V9 works OK for me.

I am sending a pic to explain further.
                          Regards
                          John

                            OK, I see.

I also see that if you paste the symbol into a grid field and save the row, it returns . Interestingly enough, the is actually saved in the table correctly, so it's all in how the grid is interpreting it.

Some research tonight suggests defining the charset=utf-8 but Alpha's already doing that. So, more research later....

I'd try a different font in the CSS.
