Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Create Timestamp.

    Hello
    I have a field "mydate" where I wish to record when a record is updated.
    This field is a character field

    I have looked for instruction how this is done.
    I found Steve Woods explanation
    its just:

    mydate = session.Timestamp
    session.Timestamp is a char, so if you want time and date to separate fields:

    mydate = ctod(time("MM/dd/yyyy",session.timestamp))
    mytime = time("0h:0m:0s",session.timestamp)
    But I am not clear where these details are entered.

    Can anyone please assist?
    Many thanks
    John

      Here's how I do it w. a date. You can do the same for time.

        Thanks for the answers.
        I am using ADB.
        Peter regarding the Initial value I suspect that will give me the date/time when the record is created.

        What I am after doing is to have a field that will give me the date/time when a record is changed/updated. How can I do this please?

          Re: Create Timestamp.

          You can use a field rule...on the extended field type set it to calculated and put now() in the calculation field. Just realize that even if you do a mass update/change to the db this will trigger. For some this is an issue for other it is not an issue.

            You are right, John. It will give you the date/time when you save a new record. The easy way is to just create a calc field in your table. It will update each time you save the record. If you run a global operation or some such, you risk "updating" the time stamp when you probably don't want to. The alternative is to use JavaScript or one of the xbasic event handlers in the grid.

              Re: Create Timestamp.

              Thanks
              I have the calculated field update working OK now.
              I had a look at which event handler may carry out this operation but could not see which one would do the job.

              I thought CanupdateRecord may be the event but
              It allows you to abort the update if certain conditions have not been met.
              does not sound likely.

              Any ideas where I should be looking please?

                Hi John I think this may help.
                If it works it would be the easiest fix for sure.
                Keep it simple if you can.

                  Thanks Chad
                  That's an excellent feature.
                  At the moment I am using ADB as I am using Steve Woods Template and this comes with an adb.
                  Regards

                    Re: Create Timestamp.

                    JOhn,

                    One other way to do this is to on the grid go to events use the 'AfterUpdateRecords event

                    put your code in there to do the update

                    "function AfterUpdateRecords as v (Args as P, PageVariables as P)
                    with PageVariables
                    DataSubmitted.Time=now()
                    end with
                    end function
                    DataSubmitted.Fieldname = now()will work here I do have a field named time which really should be named something else but do you use that name......LOL

                    Or **************************

                    in A Dialog under form events goto "AfterValidate"
                    dim tbl as p
                    tbl = table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\time_header")
                    tbl.enter_begin()
                    tbl.Time = now()
                    tbl.enter_end()

                    session.__protected__time = tbl.Id

                    tbl.close()

                    Should give a glue for Dialogs and grids.
                    and I use this for any database connection

                      Re: Create Timestamp.

                      I use Nicolas method as well by setting the time on the CanUpadteRecord grid event:

                      '----------------------------------
                      function CanUpdateRecord as v (DataSubmitted as P, Args as p, PageVariables as p, Result as P)
                      with PageVariables
                      Result.Cancel = .f.
                      Result.ErrorHTML = ""

                      DataSubmitted.mydate = now()

                      end with
                      end function
                      '-------------------------------------

                      Remember you have to add the mydate field to the grid and make it editable, but the nice thing is that you can hide it in v10 (in v9 hiding it wouldn't work for this)

                      and it works with any backend DB
                      Cheers
