Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    run different files depending on removable drive designation

    I want to run a batch file that depends on what drive is the removable drive on the PC. This drive designation will change from user to user so I can't use fixed batch files.

    For example:
    If the removable drive is drive F:,then I want to run F.bat
    If the removable drive is drive G:,then I want to run G.bat, and so on.

    I've got the first part of determining which drive is the removable one, here it is:

    dim drvs as c
    dim cnt as n
    dim dr as c
    dim dr_sp as n
    drvs=file.drives_get(crlf())
    cnt=line_count(drvs)
    for i=1 to cnt
    dr=substr(word(drvs,i,crlf()),1,2)
    dr_sp=FILE.DRIVE_SPACE_AVAIL(dr)
    if file.drive_type(dr)="Removable"
    if dr_sp>0

    What's your command to run a named bat file?

    This works here....

    Code:
    sys_shell("c:\test.bat")
    [COLOR="blue"]'batch file named test executes[/COLOR]

    [COLOR="blue"]'to substitute a known variable[/COLOR]
    dr = "test"
    sys_shell("c:"+chr(92)+dr+".bat")
    [COLOR="Blue"]'batch file named test executes[/COLOR]

      I don't know what the command would be yet, that's part of the question.

      As a batch file(MSDOS) command it would be (if the F: drive were the removable drive) C:\ScanShark_Processing\Sync_F.bat

      I don't know XBasic code well. My XBasic skill level is OK. I can generally modify code to reflect my paths, etc. but writing new code is beyond my skill level. Even at that, I've managed to write an app that beats, at most levels, a comparable app written by a company that grosses about a billion per year.

      If I could rely on my customers to know what drive designation they're using, I would have been done by now and wouldn't be bothering you. I do appreciate the help.

        Building off of what Stan posted using the sys_shell.
        Code:
        sys_shell("C:\ScanShark_Processing\Sync_" + left(dr,1) +".bat")

          Variable holding the drive letter is dr ?

          Command is

          Sys_shell("C:\ScanShark_Processing\Sync_"+dr+".bat")

            Re: run different files depending on removable drive designation

            I tried Stans line of code. I got an "out of memory" error even though the thumb drive was completely empty (2 GB drive) and I had just a few megs of data.

            The batch file tests OK and the thumb drive had plenty of space in that circumstance.

            -------Here's the whole string of code--------

            dim drvs as c
            dim cnt as n
            dim dr as c
            dim dr_sp as n
            drvs=file.drives_get(crlf())
            cnt=line_count(drvs)
            for i=1 to cnt
            dr=substr(word(drvs,i,crlf()),1,2)
            dr_sp=FILE.DRIVE_SPACE_AVAIL(dr)
            if file.drive_type(dr)="Removable"
            if dr_sp>0
            Sys_shell("C:\ScanShark_Processing\Sync_"+dr+".bat")
            end if
            end if
            next

              Re: run different files depending on removable drive designation

              Add the indicated line.

              Code:
              dim drvs as c
              dim cnt as n
              dim dr as c
              dim dr_sp as n
              drvs=file.drives_get(crlf())
              cnt=line_count(drvs)
              for i=1 to cnt
              dr=substr(word(drvs,i,crlf()),1,2)
              [COLOR="Red"]ui_msg_box("Alert","Drive found is ("+dr+")")[/COLOR]
              dr_sp=FILE.DRIVE_SPACE_AVAIL(dr)
              if file.drive_type(dr)="Removable"
              if dr_sp>0
              Sys_shell("C:\ScanShark_Processing\Sync_"+dr+".bat")
              end if
              end if
              next
              If you see any spaces inside the parentheses, you need to trim your dr variable. An incorrect command

              Sys_shell("C:\ScanShark_Processing\Sync_F .bat")
              Sys_shell("C:\ScanShark_Processing\Sync_ F.bat")

              would result in the indicated error. (system memory, not drive space)

              In my previous example

              Code:
              sys_shell("c:\test .bat")
              ERROR: Out of memory
              There can be only one.

                Re: run different files depending on removable drive designation

                With the new line of code, I get messages boxes saying drive found is C, then I click OK and I get Drive found is D, etc. until I click OK on the F: drive (my removable drive) and get the "out of memory" message.

                  Re: run different files depending on removable drive designation

                  Try it this way then, I put the line in the wrong place.

                  Code:
                  dim drvs as c
                  dim cnt as n
                  dim dr as c
                  dim dr_sp as n
                  drvs=file.drives_get(crlf())
                  cnt=line_count(drvs)
                  for i=1 to cnt
                  dr=substr(word(drvs,i,crlf()),1,2)
                  dr_sp=FILE.DRIVE_SPACE_AVAIL(dr)
                  if file.drive_type(dr)="Removable"
                  if dr_sp>0
                  [COLOR="Red"]ui_msg_box("Alert","Drive found is ("+dr+")")
                  ui_msg_box("Alert","Batch file to run is "+quote("C:\ScanShark_Processing\Sync_"+dr+".bat"))[/COLOR]
                  Sys_shell("C:\ScanShark_Processing\Sync_"+dr+".bat")
                  end if
                  end if
                  next
                  You should see the message in my screenshot with no spaces.

                    We're getting closer.

                    instead of running SYNC_F.bat it's trying to run SYNC_F:.bat

                        Thanks Stan and Andy.

                        That did the trick. I owe you both a beer...actually, by now, I owe Stan a whole case for all the times he's helped me over the years.

                        By the way, in case anybody's interested, here the whole string of code with the messages cleaned up:

                        dim drvs as c
                        dim cnt as n
                        dim dr as c
