Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 Doc in V10

I copied my A5-V9 a5doc folder and pasted it in the v10 execuatable folder, and then ran the new update for a5 doc - it said the installation was successful, and installed to the corect path, but when I open an app in V10, go to the control panel, tables, and right click the familiar "addins" are not there!!

    any ideas?

        Re: A5 Doc in V10

This appears to be an issue with the way that A5 is processing control panel addins. I don't know when this started because I have been doing stuff lately in v9. It used to work fine in v10.

There is a simple fix but I am hoping that Alpha will resolve the problem so it is not necessary to contact all A5Doc users with a patch.

BTW, after installing a5v10 the problem also occurs in a5v8, if that is installed. a5v9 and a5v7 do not exibit the problem after a5v10 is installed.

        Bill.

          Hi Bill,

What method do you use to determine the Control Panel Addin folder? If you are explicitly coding it an installer, you need to use one on the other (or both). If the username folder one does not exist, Alpha 5 will use just the default one.

It will normally be either the default one
          "C:\Program Files\a5V10\Control_Panel_Addins"
          or
          "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 10\Control_Panel_Addins"

Sorry I missed your call today, Bill. For the record I put what you had in

            "C:\Program Files\a5V10\Control_Panel_Addins"

            into

            "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 10\Control_Panel_Addins"

still doesn't work - NONE OF THE ADDINS FROM ANYONE WORK, EITHER, Cal's, Jerry's, etc.

am in XP Pro SP3, build 3507

              I am running A5v10 build 2725-3520.
I tried both with and without one on the other directories existing and with files in there or not, and it worked fine whenever an addin file was present. (note you must have the right context of the control panel).

The CSDA Code Utility and the CSDA Screen Capture (which has a very extensive diag info in it's help) should install for every possible context, so you could test with them.

When you say none of the Addins work, do you get the addins menu, or it doesn't exist? If it exists, and you have addins to choose, are you saying they don't execute, or are you saying none of the addins show up at all?

As far as I know and tests indicate this, Alpha recalculates them each time you drop the menu bar or right click in the control panel, so the effects are immediate.

This workaround seems to work until I can determine what is really going on.

Copy all the contents of control_panel_addins folder to a temp folder. Then copy them back to control_panel_addins folder. That has worked for me and A5Doc then shows in the Addins right click menu.

Obviously I want to find out what is going on here.

                  Bill.

I wonder if it's an attribute bit on the file or folder? Or maybe you have UAC on? What would you get if you execute (prior to it working)

                    ?filefind.get(a5.Get_Exe_Path()+chr(92)+"Control_Panel_Addins"+chr(92)+"*.form")
                    ?filefind.get(A5_GetApplicationDataFilename("Control_Panel_Addins")+chr(92)+"*.form")

Change "form" to whatever the context file extension is.

                      Re: A5 Doc in V10

The difference is that file properties immediately after install does not have "file is ready for archiving" checked. After copying, that box is checked.

When the box is not checked,
                      Code:
                      filefind.get("c:\program files\a5v10\control_panel_addins\*.*",0,"PN|D|T")
does not list the file. When box is checked the file is listed. I am waiting to hear from Selwyn how they get the list of files.

But I need to see if the Astrum installer can make sure this is checked. With previous versions of Astrum this property was checked after install.

                      Bill.

Try the workaround above. Copy all files in control_panel_addins to another location and then copy them back. All this is doing is setting the archive bit on the file.
