Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I hope you are right. When I bought version 1 I thought their tutorial was very good. It came with real books.

And considering how HUGE the hard copy would be, that obviously will be a requirement!!! :D

Would love to see a export to excel button or supercontrol if you would call it that.

And add it to any web grid.

You can add a button to a grid currently using a somewhat convoluted process. It's not fun. But Selwyn did say that this was a feature he was planning on adding and he didn't have time to get it into v10. It is something that we really need to make the web side more like the desktop.

To be able to set defaults for a grid or tabbed ui for text alignment or button sizing. perhaps a way to set all items at once like when you highlight fields and move them to the grid at the same time. Highlight them and change the inline style and it changes all of them.

Another one is that wouldn't it be nice to set a default for things like what to do on a drop down list "if not in list do what".

Little things like that would be great.

                        Re: Version 11 Predictions

the problem with documentation is product knowledge!

For someone to seriously document Alpha, they would need years of experience with Alpha. I have always thought the best way to get good documentation would be for Alpha to first come up with a good format for the documentation (as Ed did with the CHP), then have ALL developers at Alpha take off for maybe one month from ANY work on new or current projects, and each developer work on a section he was most competent in.

Once they got it up-to-date, it would be faily simple to maintain.

Martin Heller wrote a terrific book for writing a web app, but (in my opinion) he does not have enough time-in-the-barrel to seriously document Alpha.

I would like to throw in a prediction or two -

                          1) multi-server/core support

                          2) Improved SQL reporting (no need for passive or active links)

                            2) Improved SQL reporting (no need for passive or active links)
What would be used then to connect to the SQL data then?

                                Re: Version 11 Predictions

Right, ADO direct connection (which you can do now) but with the ability to use something like SQL report "sets" or multiple linked SQL tables or sub-reports within reports, etc.

The ability to create Alpha dbf sets is an extremely powerful and fast method of achieving this. But currently with SQL tables, even properly joined SQL tables, you can't achieve the same fast functionality for all cases and/or you can end up creating very large flat SQL views with complex joins.

Therefore there are times that you have to use passive tables to create these sets for certain report types.

Refreshing links and converting to dbf can really slow things down.

Believe me - I am not knocking Alpha Report Writer at all. I spent several months investigating other alternatives like MS Reporting Services which upon initial study was enticing and interesting with some very powerful features as well. But when you compare the benefit of having the Report Writer built in, a few extra cool benefits doesn't tip the scales. I will stay with Alpha!;)
