Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Connect to SQL on remote server

    Hi All,

Is it possible to connect to a SQL database that resides on a hosted site from a application running on my local machine. In other words, I would like to point to the web based SQL tables while developing on my office machine.

If it is possible, how would I do this since ADO will not see the database to create the connection string.

    Thanks,

    Scott

Re: Connect to SQL on remote server

    Scott:
You should be able to connect to a remote SQL server by prefixing the DB name with the IP Address or host.domain. Before you go to too much trouble trying to get this to work, make sure the host is not blocking the default SQL server port (1433). If that is the case, you will need to change the Port on the SQL server to a working port or connect via a VPN.

Let me add a word of caution here, database servers are generally never exposed to the outside world...if you have any control of architecture, make sure the server is protected behind a firewall and use a VPN to remotely connect to the database for development.

      Thanks John,

I have tried what you suggested above after confirming that port 1433 was not blocked and no joy. I suspect that its a path issue to the server since the server uses a shared IP. I was hoping that the SQL ADO dialog would be able to pick it up somehow to create the connection string for me, but I guess its a trial and error type thing to get the correct string.

Hope all is well with you.

Why don't you back up the data on the server upload to your machine at home and work with that.

Then when you are done the only thing that you have to do is change the SQL statement and voila you are done.

I just wanted to try and connect this way to see if it would work. It would be nice to not have to sync up the data and possibly open the door for a nice hybrid app.

          But thanks for the reply.

What version of SQL Server are you using?

Re: Connect to SQL on remote server

I typically do the initial SQL Server connection with Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. Once that's working, it's easy to figure out the connection string.

Usually a SQL Server at a host is set up to use only private network addresses: 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x; you would need to ask the host to give it an external IP address if you wanted to use it from your own machine. They could limit access using an accepted IP address list to maintain security.

Re: Connect to SQL on remote server

I should add if you are using SQL Server Express edition to make a remote connection to...it is not going to work. The Express edition SQL servers will not accept remote connections. To connect remotely, you will need a full version of MS SQL.

Well that's the ticket right there .... It is express .. no wonder why it wouldn't connect ...

                  Thanks John!

And that you Martin for your input!

Good news!! I was able to successfully connect to SQL Express 2005 that resides on a hosted site from a application running on my local machine.

This article helped me do it: http://myhosting.com/wiki/SQL_Expres...ote_Connection.

Re: Connect to SQL on remote server

That's a good article, by the way. It only applies if the SQL Server Express instance is allowed to use an external IP address, however.

If you go through the configuration and the only IP addresses available are in the private 192.168.*.* or 10.*.*.* ranges, then you either need to connect through a VPN or ask for an external IP address. Which you get will depend on the hosting provider's infrastructure and policies.

For the default configuration of Express, you are correct. But see the article that Joe referred to if you want to reconfigure your Express instance.
