Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report filtering

    The below code is used to filter a report by postcode and one other term. Now a postcode is in the format of letter,letter,number,number,number,letter (egs. BA12RP, BA112EQ, DT345TE, etc) in the UK.

    When the below report is generated, they will want a report on cases in all postcodes starting with BA1 or DT34 for example. Now at the moment it returns no results as it is searching for "BA1" as an exact term. How can i change this to search for all results starting with "BA1"?

    Code:
    dim filter as c
    dim order as c
    Filter = "" 'clear any previous values
    Filter = "postcode = " + quote(postcode) + ".and. closed_client = " + quote("No")
    Order = ""
    Dim filename as c
    filename = session.session_folder + "active_cases_in_postcode.pdf"
    tbl_name = "[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\main.dbf"
    recs = A5_GET_RECORDS_IN_QUERY(tbl_name,filter)

    if recs= 0
    currentform.RedirectTarget = "no_records.a5w"
    end
    else
    filename = report.saveas("active_cases_in_postcode@[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\main.ddd","pdf",filter,order,filename,.f.)
    currentform.RedirectTarget = session.session_url + "active_cases_in_postcode.pdf?" +  time("hms3")
    end if
    Thanks

    Re: Report filtering

    (left(postcode,3) = "BA1" .or. left(postcode,4) = "DT34")

    in the filter string it would be

    Code:
    "(left(postcode,3) =  'BA1' .or. left(postcode,4) = 'DT34')" + " .and. closed_client = " + quote("No")
    There can be only one.

      Perfect....I can work with: left(postcode,4)
      Reason being is some area's main postcodes can be "BA11" or "BA1" (two different areas) at the start of the postcode, followed by a space and the "2AQ" (for example)

      How do I force users to have a space inbetween "BA11" and "2AQ" or "BA1" and "2AQ" when inputting the information into a grid?

        Re: Report filtering

        Don't know how you force it but you can split the whole fairly easily once it is entered.

        Code:
        tst = "BA112AQ"
        ? left(tst,-3)
        = "BA11"

        ? right(tst,3)
        = "2AQ"

        tst = "BA12AQ"

        ? left(tst,-3)
        = "BA1"
        ? right(tst,3)
        = "2AQ"
        There can be only one.

          Not entirely sure that will work in my case, although I do get the thinking behind it.

          Is there a validation rule i can use to ensure a space is entered in the postcode. The reason for needing this is the proper format for a postcode in the uk is BA11 2AQ. But some people are lazy and it commonly happens that people will enter BA112AQ without the space. So people who lazily (spl?) enter in the postcode without the space and get a validation error, will know what format they have to enter the postcode in.

            Re: Report filtering

            I would do this in the table field rules, cansaverecord event.

            Code:
            tbl = table.current()
            t_len = len(alltrim(tbl.postcode))
            sig_len = len(alltrim(remspecial(tbl.postcode)))
            select
                case t_len = 6 .and. sig_len = 6 'entered 6 character code with no space
                tbl.postcode = left(alltrim(tbl.postcode),-3)+" "+right(alltrim(tbl.postcode),3)

                case t_len = 7 .and. sig_len = 6 'entered 6 character code with a space
                'do nothing

                case t_len = 7 .and. sig_len = 7 'entered 7 character code with no space
                tbl.postcode = left(alltrim(tbl.postcode),-3)+" "+right(alltrim(tbl.postcode),3)

                case t_len = 8 .and. sig_len = 7 'entered 7 character code with a space
                'do nothing

                case else
                ui_msg_box("Alert","Invalid entry")
                cancel()

              Tried this and it didn't seem to make the corrections it's meant to.

              Now because I'm using web grids to enter these details in, should this be placed elsewhere? In a grid event(which doesn't include cansaverecord)?

                Sorry, don't know anything about grids or web apps. Perhaps someone else will chime in on how do to do this with a web app.
