Need help with multiuser entering new invoice

I have a problem. I have a networked optimized - shadowed database and more than one user entering a new record at the same time.
Both users are getting the same invoice number for the new records.
I have a basic invoice set (similar to Alpha Sport sample) and the new items are linked by one to many by the invoice number so both users are creating a new invoice with the same invoice number

The simplest answer would be not to create the invoice number until the invoice was complete, However, this would be difficult when adding child records to the new invoice.

Another method would be to create a new invoice and save it right away so the number exists and can not be duplicated.

The 2 suggestions above would work if you were just using auto increment to create the invoice number.

The last suggestion would be to actually create your invoice number based on parts of the invoice content, such as Smith Co. could create a invoice number as 1234SMCO, and Jones CO. could then be 1234JOCO.

That's a quick example, and it might be better to incorporate date/ time within the invoice number or part of the clients phone number, address or what ever. I think you get the idea. This would require you to NOT use auto increment and "roll your own" numbering system.

Michael, if two users begin a new invoice_header record at the same time the auto-increment field value in each will "appear" the same, initially. However, if they both save their work you'll see that the auto-increment field rule gives the two records separate numbers. Check the help file topic "How Auto-Increment Fields Work".

Thank you all for your help. I will try and implement some of the suggestions and see if it will work out.
