Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Info World

Did anyone notice the InfoWorld articles the Alpha constantly refers to were written by Martin Heller who is a Alpha employee. I hardly see how this can be considered unbiased?

    Here is his website http://www.mheller.com/

I am not sure when he started at Alpha maybe we could get a response from Alpha or Martin himself.

As far as I know, he has only been an employee as of recently. But Steve is right, you can't be an unbaised arbitrator of the greater web world, if your paycheck is coming from a software house. Maybe he'll recuse himself.

I recused myself the day I went to work for Alpha. :)

I won't be writing about Alpha or any of its competitors except from an inside point of view. :(

            Re: InfoWorld

As pointed out in a similar post, Martin is a recent Alpha employee and when those articles were written he was not....at least I assumed this so it led me to believe that, at the time, the articles were unbiased. I guess assumptions are just that---in this case just a best guess or an opinion---and naively, I imagine, I usually base mine initially on the side of someone being ethical.....

How about writing some more Alpha documentation! Especially examples on how to utilize all of the grid events. Sort of a Grid events for dummies (Me).

That's on my list, Tommy. It's kind of a long list, however. :)

                    Martin,

I know your plate is full, but it would help a lot if you could look at two types of errors that plague us long time Alpha developers. (It's probably hard to believe, by my programming is not always perfect)

The first one happens in desktop and web and is the most dreaded of all errors: "argument is wrong data type"

I shudder when I see this because it could be any variable anywhere. Only thing to do is start remming out sections and try to pin down where it happened. It's also a bit annoying because the program had to know which one it was in order to generate the error. Why not tell us?

The second is a web error like the one in the attached photo. The error message indicates that there is an error in the "behind the screens" scripts. Again, this could come from anywhere. For this, we could use some trouble shooting tips. Otherwise, it's "start at the top and look at everything".

As Martin has said, he is working on docs. It is a huge job. I don't envy him. In the mean time, most of us struggle w. the v10 web grid events. So far, we can rely on Selwyn, Bob Moore and Wolfgang for v10 grid event assist (hope I didn't miss anyone). I don't mean to imply that there are not plenty of other knowledgeable developers who help on this board w. v10 web - there are. But the stickler is events - particularly xbasic events and how to follow through on them. JavaScript events are relatively easy. Just go to W3schools or a dozen other help sites. But the secret nomenclature and functionality of the xbasic events in v10 is a challenge to put it mildly. We know Martin Heller is very, very busy. Next week he gives a 40-hour course on v10 in Burlington. So we won't be able to rely on him for quite a while. In the mean time, it's every man/woman for himself/herself - sort of.
