Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Code:
Improved Multi-Monitor Support - Alpha Five now has improved support for machines with multiple monitors. Alpha Five can now be run on a secondary monitor and all pop-up windows and menus will be correctly postioned. To enable this support, several new functions have been added.

ui_display_monitor_enum() - Get all the displays attached to the system.
ui_display_monitor_primary() - Get the primary display name
ui_display_monitor_from_window(C Windowname) - Get the name of a display that a window is on (or nearest to). If windowname is omitted, the display for the main Alpha Five window is returned.
    Excellent, multi-monitor support.

Re: Release Candidate for Next Update

I should add that you should apply beta patches to second installations of the product, unless you're willing to risk having to patch back to an earlier version. I wrote a short announcement about doing this for servers a while back, and there's a more complete blog entry about it coming up.

You can also do this for your IDE. Install a second copy at a different location, in a second application group menu. Use that for testing patches, especially beta patches. You might also want to make a second Alpha desktop icon with a different name: most likely, you'll have to do this for the first installation, since the second installation will overwrite the first one's icon.

And no, we're not trying to sell more licenses. The second installation will share the first one's license and recent database list.

So, what do you all think of this patch? Is it stable on your machine? Do the new features work? Has it broken any of your applications?

We really need to know this before we release it as a production release. We also need to do the release fairly soon, so please test early and often. :)

Re: Release Candidate for Next Update

It has changed / broken the behavior of my desktop apps.

I have "Quick Find" fields on almost all screens and the users can enter a Work Order, PO, etc and hit enter and a statement like the following runs.

                Code:
                nrecs=topparent.queryrun("wonumf="+s_quote(vproddbquickfind),"","","Yes","")
Totally different behavior now - the embedded browse screens are not filtered - it just moves the browse to the appropriate row.

                Regards,

                Jeff

How about setting up a new forum for patches? I gets a bit confusing when bugs, etc are mixed in with the other stuff.
