Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    remove line

    I have read the help and I see I can remove a line from a list variable, but it requires me say the line number.

    I populate a listview on an xdialog by adding to a list variable, but there will be times when viewing the list view that a line has had the wrong data eg: wrong qty. and therefore needs to be removed and redone. I would like to doubleclick on the line and remove it. How would I get the line (row) number in the listview based on the selection?

    I can actually clear the whole list by setting the variable to "" but this means re-entering each line again.

    Mark, how about showing us the code and furnishing the sample data set you're using?

    Have you looked at the List and PropertySheet example in AlphaSports?

      Re: remove line

      Not near mycomputer with Alpha at the moment. When I do I will look at the property list - have not tackled that yet. In relation to my query, what I do is open xdialog with a blanklistview based on a Global character variable. For this I will call it "mylist". The list view has columns like Surname, Firstname, mobile etc. To populate the listview the user clicks an add button which opens another xdialog with fields to suit the columns.

      The user fills the fields and clicks OK. At this point the variable is populated with data eg:

      if mylist = "" then

      mylist = Surname + "|" + Firstname + "|" + mobile

      else

      mylist = crlf() + Surname + "|" + Firstname + "|" + mobile

      End if

      The above populates the list with the contents of the mylist variable. Now it may be that I populate with 10 rows of names but I see that I have miss spelt row 4. As I cannot edit, I need to remove that Line in the Mylist variable so I simply want to have a double click on the list on the row and get a prompt to remove yes of no etc. If I cleck yes, that row is removed from variable and the list now is one row less.

      I know that if I double click on the row I can capture the contents but not the row number, so I am looking at some method doing a loop and remove based on word match, but I am not sure that will remove everything.

      Does this give you more.

        Yes, but the actual code is still necessary.

        In the meantime here's something to think about. Why not embed an identifier field in each row. i.e. have the user give it a row number, or do it for them with your "save" button script. Make it the first column in your listview. Then have the listview return the "row number" from the first column when the user double clicks.

          Try
          Code:
          MyList = remove_blank_lines(stritran(MyList,Value_of_Current_Line,""))

            Re: remove line

            I looked at your answer Tim, but I can't actually isolate it to the exact row to be removed. Attached is the DB. It is a simple rent schedule tool. Designed to provide a resident a project payment schedule based on their rents.

            When you open you will need to Ctrl Alt Delete to get into the control panel. If you open normally and simply create a schedule first you will see the steps taken. The listview on create schedule is the culprit.

            I am looking at Tom's solution, but I can see that in order for that to work I will need to create a function that reshapes the list variable everytime with proper row numbers. Another way may be to add checkbox to the list, but I do not know what event captures if checked. Using VB this used to if ischecked = True.

                Thank you Tim - that did the trick. Again you have provided a solution that seems so simple. Where did you get the bag of knowledge on Listviews?

                  Re: remove line

                  Your welcome Mark. I don't really have an official bag of knowlege. Just an accumulation of sorts. A bit like the the seeds that stick to your wool socks when you walk through the long grass.

                  It has been brought to my attention that the code I suggested would delete all lines that were the same. Ie if a duplicate entry was made and the user deletes one then the other would also get deleted. The stritrn function has some more parameters that can help with this. Check them out.

                  Thinking aloud while writing this you could also populate the list as an array instead of a string variable. Then the choice would be returned as an index number to the array(define 'Id' as numeric). Then you would use a <array>.delete(Id,1) to delete the line.

                    Re: remove line

                    Thanks again - I will look at the array approach in my other project. This project was small so a duplicate situation is no big deal if it happens.

                    I know the seeds you speak of really well. Never looked at them as a metaphor for something positive. I do know that if there is a heavy dew they are an even bigger issue.
