Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error opening grid table/view. Error loading table

Im completely new to web based applications and right now Im doing some educational development.

Ive created a very basic, read only web application based on a single table. Im using security. I have a development computer and a server that for now is just used for testing purposes.

On the server, I have wiped the hard drive clean and install windows 2003 using all the default settings. Ive deployed an alpha 5v10 desktop application that works just fine. I installed the alpha 5v10 web application server.

Using my developmental machine, Ive created and deployed the web application. I have set up port forwarding on my router. If I set up my developmental machine as the web application server, I'm able to run my web application over the internet from other computers using their browser.

I published my web application on the sever by setting up a web project profile. I believe its recommended that the database files should not be stored in the a5webroot folder with the web application files for security reasons. Ive set up the file structure the same on both machines.

My problem: Im denied access to the data files on the server. I can bring up the application, I can log on, but when I try to navigate to a web page that displays a grid from the one table, I get an error message. Error opening grid table/view. Access is denied The message shows the proper path so Im assuming this is a security issue. Ive tried what I think would fix this problem but without any success.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

I've create another database model and deployed this model on the same server, and this application works fine.

I copied the methodology from the first application that does not work.

I've spent hours trying to figure this out. I don't know what to do at this point. I'm assuming that there must be some code written that I'm not able to change that has locked me out.

    Does this make any sense?

Re: Error opening grid table/view. Error loading table

I have spent more hours trying to get this to work that I could have hired someone to make me a web application to do this.

It's a very simple, read only application that is based on one table that has 4 character fields and one JPeg Image field.

The purpose of the application is to allow family members to view pictures. Three of the character fields are used only to set grouping and order. The last character field allows me to add a caption to the picture.

I do have security configured. The application works fine on my development computer. When I try to deploy this application on a server, access is denied to the data files. It doesn't matter if I try to access the application over the internet or the intranet. I log in, the logged in menu appears. I select a group of picture to view. The page tries to load, but then I get the access denied message to the database. The path is correct.

Somebody must have some idea as to what to look for or at. I've successfully deployed another application that is far more complex allowing the user to edit , add and delete. This application has security and is deployed on the same sever. It works just fine.

I watched the video that Selwyn created regarding paths and it appears that I have everything set up correctly.

I'm new to the web application side, but I've been using Alpha software products since 1990. I don't think this is rocket science, but it appears to be beyond my capabilities.

For what's it's worth, I finally was able to get this WEB application to work.

Unfortunately, what I did was start over completely from scratch. The second time around, everything worked fine. Fortunately, it only took a day to recreate the database and WEB application. To the best of my knowledge, everything was the same.

This is disappointing. What if this problem manifested itself on a major WEB application. It could have been a disaster if after spending weeks working on a project, it would break and not be fixable.

Re: Error opening grid table/view. Error loading table

I am having exactly the same problem with alpha 5 vers 10. on my web app server machine i have tried moving the database to the exact same connection settings as the development side. Same error. And of course, the connection string is encripted in the code. Any ideas? Frustrating!

          I have tried c:\a5webrooot\studiohahn.accdb (office 2007)

          I have tried \\servername\a5webrooot\studiohahn.accdb

I assume it does work with office 2007 the same as a regular mdb?

          any ideas?

          thanks,
