Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Video : Calling a Detail View with an Icon Displayed in Grid

    Here's a new video tutorial that describes a technique I use to call a detail view in a modal popup window by clicking on an icon displayed in the grid.

    Very Cool Bob!

    It really does make the grid more polished....and it's not like it isn't cool out of the box. :)

    Thanks for sharing! Your videos and your explanations are all so well done.

    Thanks also for taking the time to make these videos available to all of us.

    Regards,

    Jeff

        Hi Bob

        neat little trick, especially useful if you want to open a detail view programmatically.

        In the case where you just want an icon to display in the link and open the detail view by clicking the icon, why not just set the link properties to "static image" as in attached example?

        Works fine for me without javascript. Or am I missing something?

        BTW : I Appreciate you videos. Flatten the lurning curve .

        Thanks

          Hi Wolfgang,

          I totally missed the hyperlink properties .. didn't see it.

          Let me explain how I missed that ... if you do not explicitly select the hyperlink field in the detail view properties, Alpha will use the first label field. When it does so, it does not change the field in the grid to a hyperlink, thus you do not have the option to set a static image.

          That's what sent me looking for another solution.

          Sometimes I take the path less trodden .. but I always learn something along the way.

          Thanks,
          Bob Moore

            Yeah, if I am honest, I think I also overlooked the link properties at first. But nevertheless, your js code is still useful for me.

            thanks again !

            kind regards

              Re: Video : Calling a Detail View with an Icon Displayed in Grid

              I added this ADD icon to the 'customize grid toolbar layout' and it puts a neat little icon in the toolbar right under the icons as Bob has shown. It opens the detail view window with a new blank record just like clicking on the New Record link. Just remove the text in the Add new records link label in the detail view properties.
              <tr>
              <td width="21px" height="23px" align="center" valign="middle"><img src="add.png"
              style="cursor:pointer;"
              onmouseover="src='add_over.png'"
              onmouseout="src='add.png'"
              onmousedown="src='add_down.png'"
              onmouseup="src='add.png'"
              onclick="{grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord();">
              </td>
              <td colspan="{grid.colspan}" class="{Grid.style}FooterTD" nowrap="nowrap" align="{grid.RecordNavigatorAlignment}" >
              {grid.DetailViewAddNewRecordHyperlink}
              {grid.RecordNavigatorButtons}
              {grid.RecordsPerPage}&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
              {grid.toggleQBERowHyperlink}
              </td>
              </tr>

                Re: Video : Calling a Detail View with an Icon Displayed in Grid

                There are times when I don't want the +/- or any other image for the row expander, but rather, I want a button or hyperlink that is more descriptive. Example: I am using the row expander option to gather input on certain items by opening a new record (or the logged in user's saved data) from a feedback table. Having just the image to indicate that they can leave feedback didn't seem intuitive enough. So I added a hyperlink (Leave Feedback) with this code in the js onclick event:

                Code:
                {Grid.object}.rowExpandToggle({Grid.RowNumber}); return false;
                But then I saw the expand icon sitting out there still, and it seemed superfluous. But I don't see a way to just turn it off. If someone knows how, let me know. Until then, I just created a 1x1 pixel image called "nothing.jpg" and used it for both the expand and collapse button images in the Custom Icons setting. Now the user sees nothing in the left-hand column, but can clearly see the link that directs him to leave feedback.

                  Wolfgang,
                  Your method works well too. I am not sure if there are any advantages to using either way except that your example is easier. I am all for easier.
                  Thanks

                  Thanks for planting the seed, Bob.

                    Re: Video : Calling a Detail View with an Icon Displayed in Grid

                    Frank .. very cool implementation of swapping images with mouse events.

                    I modified my code to toggle the images on the mouseover, mouseout events.

                    I added a static text field to the grid and inserted the following HTML for the static text label. I'm also calling a Detail View with the onclick event.

                    Code:
                    <img src="search_add.png"
                    style="cursor:pointer"
                    onmouseover="src='search_add_bright.png'"
                    onmouseout="src='search_add.png'"
                    onclick="{Grid.object}.detailView({Grid.RowNumber});">
                    I don't think this can be accomplised with a static image field when calling a detail view.
