Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Checking for Value in DropDownList

I want to be able to enable a control based on the value in a drop down list.

I am trying to create a dialog component which contains two DropDownList controls. I want to enable the second DropDownList only if certain conditions are met. However, I do not know the correct values to set for the Enable Expression. I just want to say if DropDownList_1.value <> '- Select -' then enable DropDownList_2.

Also, is there a reason that there are no javascript events available for the Dialog component? Or why you cannot do AJAX cascading with DropDownLists but you can with the grid?

Dialogs have not been updated and are not AJAX enabled. I suppose we'll have to wait for the next version before they are updated.

Or you could apply the advice here to convert the dialogs into grids depending on the urgency of the requirement: http://support.alphasoftware.com/Wha...alog Component

Yeah, I've done that too. Problem is you need to create a dummy table.

Hardly a hindrance - after all on the desktop it's exactly the same, if you want to generate an unbound standard form... I always thought that would make it more intuitive to those used to Alpha5 Desktop!

The difference is, you can use any table for an "unbound" form, because typically you are applying variables on the desktop.

Probably not good practice to do that though due to table/row locking etc? Not that I know too much about desktop stuff mind you...

I found it quite useful to create dummy tables for certain things like report retrieval "dialogs", because you have much better control over default values etc...

Re: Checking for Value in DropDownList

It is absolutely not a best practice to create a dumby table just to create a dialog form.

Things have been diverted from my original question. How can I enable control based on another control's value?

There is an enable expression value that I can put in, but it doesn't seem to be working like I would expect.

                  Benjamin,
Things have been diverted from my original question.
Not really. One of your questions was answered. This is a prime example of why to limit your thread to ONE question....in this case the DropDown list one as that is what you referred to in your thread title.

Maybe this bump will get a solution for this thread...otherwise it actually is a dead end now with your secondary question only answered.
                  Mike

best practice or not It does work pretty well, I use a grid as dialog to generate some graphs which appear in a modal window when pushing an on grid button, the graphs can be filtered based on some fields in the grid and I just disappeared the submit button so user can Not submit the entered values
                    Cheers
