Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Steve,

Both GoToWebinar and Glance have 30 to 45 day free trials, so if for any reason you can't use Jonathan's subscription, then you might try both of those before making a commitment to buy. I plan to try them both, also.

Re: Demo - conversion to SQL and the mega grid

Steve, did you go the AlphaDAO route (which unlocks all the SQL power), or the Active Link Tables route (which lets you preserve your DBF-oriented code)? It sounds like you took the former.

Re: Demo - conversion to SQL and the mega grid

AlphaDAO all the way. I knew that Active Link tables were going to be limiting. By the way, although a long way from expert, I have a decent amount of SQL knowledge including formal course work. But that was a while back and sql has not been something I use on a daily basis. But it will come back quickly.

That is what is so good about these impromptu online get-togethers. A bunch of us with limited knowledge get together and hash it out, with one quy being the "part moderator, part instructor", me in this case. The end result is everyone walks away with a little more practical knowledge than when they arrived. Its not required that the host be a top expert in the subject, it matters that they know how to present and interact and are honest about what they don't know.

That said, I encourage any of you to attend my weekly "Any Topic" Alpha Roundtable, Fridays at Noon Pacific time. See my website under Webinars and click Join Meeting at the appropriate time. I've been doing this for almost three years and everyone always comes away a little more educated; and we have fun.

                Steve,
Since this topic is languishing, and no one seems interested, I'll sign up so you will have at least one attendee. (grin)

As would I....obviously a bit behind on reading the messageboard with this late acknowledgement.

Just realized that I have a conflict tomorrow and will have to cancel. I was thinking when I signed up that this was on Thursday and my calendar was clear.

This was a very important topic for me so if there's any way that it could be recorded it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes I will record. Better yet, I am sure we (the IADN gang) will turn this in to a series of 'short courses' on this and related subjects. Remember, I am presenting this particular class as an Alpha SQL novice, not an expert. But we do have experts in the mix and with a little coordination, we can bring them together for all types of short courses.

If Wednesdays work, we'd like to propose a "workshop Wednesday" idea with short courses, product showcases, case studies, panel discussions, etc. We figure every Wednesday is a different topic and as many presentors as come forward.

Formal courses have their place, but these impromptu short presentations can work wonders as you learn first hand how some peer developer struggeled through a tough spot.
