Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Converting Desktop Operations to the Web App Server

I'd love a bit of direction regarding WHERE on an a5w page xbasic goes when converting an operation from the desktop to the application server. Steve W. gave me some great advice awhile ago, but I'm not quite "there" yet. I'd appreciate any help. I believe that this capability will provide me with a powerful tool to enhance my application development.

    Thank you!

It would help if you were more specific.

Re: Converting Desktop Operations to the Web App Server

      Martin,

I have a crosstab that runs on the desktop. It works perfectly there, but I want to put it on the web. I know that I can use the code from the desktop and alter it to run on the web, but I don't know where to put it. I believe it's ON the a5w page, but I'm not sure.

      I appreciate your help!

There are different ways to do this. One way is to put your code in a note pad text file and name it w. an a5w page extension. Then on your web page put the following code in:

        <%a5
        a5w_include("yourfile.a5w")
        %>

          Peter,

Thanks for this suggestion; I appreciate it. I guess I'm not quite sure WHERE on a web page I put any code so that it executes when the pages is loaded. Is it as simple as clicking the "insert xbasic" button at the top of the page and entering the code?

          Thank you.

            Rob,

Click on the source tab in the a5w page editor and put the reference code in between the head tags. Something like this:
            Code:
            <head>
Might be some other HTML here...

            <%a5
            a5w_include("yourfile.a5w")
            %>
            </head>
You could put the whole operation directly there, but then it gets messy. If you just have a page of xbasic only using notepad, then there is less chance of messing up your HTML, et. al. - if you know what I mean

Re: Converting Desktop Operations to the Web App Server

Thanks, Peter; this will be a big help, I'm sure. I'm wondering if I can put the code in the "on grid execute" section at the component level instead of at the page level. I'm asking because this crosstab is part of a tabbed ui. When I went to the source tab there,it said any code modifications made there would be overwritten when the tabbed ui is saved again.

The crosstab is displaying properly as part of a tabbed ui, but it doesn't update based on changing the underlying data unless I run an operation from the desktop.

              Thank you.

Yeah, a tabbed_ui page is probably not a good place to put code.

                OnGridExecute help tip says:
"This event fires every time the Grid is run, including every Ajax callback."

So, is that what you want? Actually, putting the code in an a5w page is a little outdated in many, if not most cases, given v10's options. The question is when do you want the code to run? You can run it from a grid's button if you prefer.

Thanks, Peter. This will definitely get me to the point where I can play with the code.

                  Thank you!
