Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Row Expander Problem Showing Linked Grid with Image Ref Field

    Hello All,

Can someone shed light on what is going on in the attached screen shot? Why is the session folder string being concatenated onto the image ref path?

I am running Rel 3539 on the App Server as well as 3539 on my dev machine when I published.

Is Alpha trying to make a copy of the file actually referenced in the image ref field in the session folders folder?

I have checked the A5I file and my aliases are properly defined for pointing to the proper place. Also, all the image ref fields have been encoded using the alias (not a hard path).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Jeff

Re: Row Expander Problem Showing Linked Grid with Image Ref Field

    1. images referenced by an Image Reference Field in a table need to be in a folder called images.

    2. the images folder needs to be located in same folder as the adb file that also has the .webprojects folder in it.

    3. the images folder can have sub-folders e.g. \images\logos or images\products\sport\football etc.

    4. images reference images do not get published to the webroot, they get copied by the server to display under a temporary field name on demand.

    5. Hope this helps.

Re: Row Expander Problem Showing Linked Grid with Image Ref Field

      Pete,

Thanks for the reply. Did something change on this that you know of? These restrictions basically make image ref fields basically unusable in my opnion. I really appreciate your response but a couple of them don't make sense to me and was hoping you could point me to further information from Alpha (or from you) if it is available.

      1. images referenced by an Image Reference Field in a table need to be in a folder called images.
I thought that the whole Alias thing was to allow for this type of thing....the images / data could be anywhere the alias pointed to. This makes me think Alpha has HARDCODED the word "IMAGES" into the code. As point of reference, I have approx 16,000 images that I am trying to display. Also, prior to a couple weeks ago this was working....by that I mean...the images displayed as they should with my current directory structure. The customer had a power outage and when the webserver rebooted......only then did the images start not show up properly. Which really baffles me as well. :)

      2. the images folder needs to be located in same folder as the adb file that also has the .webprojects folder in it.
This particular app makes use of 4 distinct "image" folders that all are subdirectories of the main adb folder. If the "image" directory restriction is in fact true, then this REALLY strips my gears with Alpha. Already, I have had to encode them to have an Alias in the encoded path so that you can use image ref fields in a shadowed network environment as well. This is ANOTHER thing that is not documented in Alpha too.....which is deplorable. This issue wasted several hours of my life. Now if this is true....I dunno......arghh.....

      4. images reference images do not get published to the webroot, they get copied by the server to display under a temporary field name on demand.
I was under the impression the web component just used the Alias information to point to the image in its proper place...is this incorrect? It seems to be based on what you wrote...looking for confirmation on that? Also, back to the Alias thing.....obviously the images don't get published anywhere since there are 16,000 of them.....that's what I thought the whole point of the Alias deal was....it could just point to the images.

I hope this does not come across as argumentative......I really appreciate your response. I know I vented a little here...please know it is not directed at you. I am just WAY perplexed at this point if what you say is true. I have not seen this "images" directory restriction documented ANYWHERE. Does not mean it isn't there I guess.....but I have not seen it.

      Regards,

      Jeff

Re: Row Expander Problem Showing Linked Grid with Image Ref Field

Well - it works for me.

I was involved in the Beta process and that's what happened at the time.

Documenting Alpha is not my job.

Why don't you just try what I have said and see what happens.

The 16,000 images have to reside somewhere so why not a folder called images in the project.

I don't know why it worked and now doesn't - and yes things do get changed from release top release. And yes there are sometimes unexpected consequences from some of those changes - but that is the price of progress, I just adapt now.

Good luck - hope you sort it.

          Thanks Pete,

That, in fact, does work (as you already know :) ). I guess I won't worry about it and just move the photos and re-encode all the records with the proper path (with alias so it works with the desktop portion of this app).

I recognize it is not your job to document Alpha...I was simply asking if you could point me to the spot in the documentation that documented this requirement(if it existed there).

It is quite frustrating when things have to be redone because of lack of documentation from Alpha.

In any case....thanks again...I really appreciate your help.

          Regards,

          Jeff

Just an update as reference for anyone reading this....I guess I still have something to sort on this.

If the filename is a hard path without an Alias encoded....the method above described by Pete works. If an alias is encoded in the image ref path...there still seems to be an issue with properly displaying images in grids. I will report back with a solution if I am able to come up with one.

            Regards,

            Jeff
