Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha Five is driving me mad!!!

I am evaluating Alpha Five after getting the evaluation copy in .Net magazine. The software looks excellent, and I want to recommend it's use to my organisation, but the tutorial system is driving me completely crazy. There doesn't seem to be a definitive tutorial or manual for Alpha Five v10, the tutorials and videos (of which there seem to be hundreds dotted across the internet) all seem to relate to different versions, so trying to follow them leads to a load of dead ends, and the Wiki seems to require you to know the software before you can learn it.

I keep trying to follow various videos, and discover that v10 behaves differently, so I keep getting stuck. Oh for something like The Missing Manual, or a comprehensive guide to v10.

Please can someone point me to a definitive guide to v10 before my brain completely stalls and I throw the software at something and say the evaluation has failed.

Perhaps you should download the latest version of Alpha as it has been updated recently.
I will agree that the documentation is lacking but it is still the best development tool of its type. I find that coming from Microsoft development tools learning alpha is fairly easy. It does require re-learning some techniques which as far as I am concerned is for the better.
    Win 10 64 Development, Win 7 64 WAS 11-1, 2, Win 10 64 AA-1,2, MySql, dbForge Studio The Best MySQL GUI Tool IMHO. http://www.devart.com/dbforge/mysql/studio/

Thanks for this. But it isn't the version that is the problem - it's locating comprehensive documentation that actually relates to version 10, and that is all in one place and properly structured so that I can learn the software properly.

Bea, Thank you. It looks just what I need, but I note that the web application book isn't yet available - only the desktop one. I'll give it a go in the hope that the fundamentals are the same....

Well, I've just spent my $21 (or its UK equivalent - I'm in the UK) on the Desktop PDF - the web version apparently hasn't been written yet - so I hope I get something out of it. This just underlines my point about the frustration of trying to learn this software.

Send an email to whom? For what purpose?

              Yes, it does help. Thanks.

For A5 web, I would recommend Dr. Martin Heller's book. But for the life of me, I don't see where you can purchase it on the Alpha web site.

I Have both the PDF and Printed copy of this book, but keep in mind, it keeps referring to Chapters that must be coming in later releases.
This book only has the first 3 chapters and nowhere does it tell you that.

Great book, just not complete !

Don't get me wrong but are we really in this level of getting information of how to use Alpha as a development environment.

I think things are just as bad as they seems to be.

Well all I can say is that the potential of this product is amazing.

Sure, tutorial wise things could be much better, I find it hard to watch another video and would love to see th other chapters of the book become available. I woild also like to have been told this one was only the first 3 before buying it.

There are a great bunch of developers working to make this better and that is what keeps me going and you have to expect a learning curve when starting with a new product,

As I said, potential wise it is worth perservering, I can not see any product that has so much potential
