Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculated field expression - maximum "if" conditions?

    V10 WEB
    I am having trouble with Calculated field expression.
    When I am adding more then 10 complicated if conditions to 'Calculated field expression' - grid - Client side properties my alpha five slovs down till no response.
    I tested conditions before - each if condition works separately perfectly, but when them adding together in 'Calculated field expression' my Alfa Five "crashes". No mater of the posted if's sequence - after tenth if condition alfa crashes/slows down/no response.

    Thanks,
    Edvins

    Re: Calculated field expression - maximum "if" conditions?

    Just some suggestions - I'm new myself, but have encountered problems like this in other applications.

    Could you post it up here for us to see it?

    Are you saying that you have tried it with 9, in different orders, and that works, but when you add the tenth, it stops working?

    Is it possible to split it up into 2 calculations. Do 5 if's in one variable, then do the remaining 5 in a separate calculation? You may be hitting a barrier that this will help get around.

      See

      Specifications for Alpha Five

      Expressions maximum # of characters 1024. You're probably hitting that.

      Can you create a less complicated expression with 10 if's?
      There can be only one.

        Perhaps it's time to build a custom user-defined function?

          Or ........set one or more variables (may have to make it/them a global) to equal your expression and then in the expression builder you use the eval() function with the variable.....eval(your_variable)....I have had to do this many times for expressions/filter lists that have exceeded well over 2000 characters.

            Re: Calculated field expression - maximum "if" conditions?

            I have row with 45 fields, 10 from fields have calculated values.
            (I'm using MySQL data base)
            I got my "error" condition for example:
            * 5 statuss fields from data base,
            * 5 not related value fields
            * one field with quantity value
            * calculated value field
            Calculated field expression (this one somthimes crashes, somthimes not):
            if(QTY_B5=0,if(QTY_B4=0,if(QTY_B3=0,if(QTY_B2=0,if(QTY_B1=0,Stan_Pri,
            if(QTY>=QTY_B1,Price_1,Stan_Pri)
            ),
            if(QTY>=QTY_B2,Price_2,
            if(QTY>=QTY_B1,Price_1,Stan_Pri))
            ),
            if(QTY>=QTY_B3,Price_3,
            if(QTY>=QTY_B2,Price_2,
            if(QTY>=QTY_B1,Price_1,Stan_Pri)))
            ),
            if(QTY>=QTY_B4,Price_4,
            if(QTY>=QTY_B3,Price_3,
            if(QTY>=QTY_B2,Price_2,
            if(QTY>=QTY_B1,Price_1,Stan_Pri))))
            ),
            if(QTY>=QTY_B5,Price_5,
            if(QTY>=QTY_B4,Price_4,
            if(QTY>=QTY_B3,Price_3,
            if(QTY>=QTY_B2,Price_2,
            if(QTY>=QTY_B1,Price_1,Stan_Pri)))))
            )

            It works perfektly, when i tested if conditions separetely.
            I just added one by one till "error" condition.

            This one crashes after adding tenth condition:
            if(toNumber(PriceCode)=0,Price1,
            if(toNumber(PriceCode)=9,Rep_Cost,
            if(toNumber(PriceCode)=8,if(Super_Pr>0,Super_Pr,if(Bulk_Pri>0,Bulk_Pri,if(Price_5>0,Price_5,if(Price_4>0,Price_4,if(Price_3>0,Price_3,if(Price_2>0,Price_2,if(Price_1>0,Price_1,Stan_Pri))))))),
            if(toNumber(PriceCode)=7,if(Bulk_Pri>0,Bulk_Pri,if(Price_5>0,Price_5,if(Price_4>0,Price_4,if(Price_3>0,Price_3,if(Price_2>0,Price_2,if(Price_1>0,Price_1,Stan_Pri)))))),
            if(toNumber(PriceCode)=6,if(Price_5>0,Price_5,if(Price_4>0,Price_4,if(Price_3>0,Price_3,if(Price_2>0,Price_2,if(Price_1>0,Price_1,Stan_Pri))))),
            if(toNumber(PriceCode)=5,if(Price_4>0,Price_4,if(Price_3>0,Price_3,if(Price_2>0,Price_2,if(Price_1>0,Price_1,Stan_Pri)))),
            if(toNumber(PriceCode)=4,if(Price_3>0,Price_3,if(Price_2>0,Price_2,if(Price_1>0,Price_1,Stan_Pri))),
            if(toNumber(PriceCode)=3,if(Price_2>0,Price_2,if(Price_1>0,Price_1,Stan_Pri)),
            if(toNumber(PriceCode)=2,if(Price_1>0,Price_1,Stan_Pri),
            if(toNumber(PriceCode)=1,Stan_Pri,
            Price1
            ))))))))))

            I just tested each condition separetely. After added one by one to calculated field expression. After tenth if I got "error".
            I changed (just for testing purpose) if condition sequence - after tenth if I got alpha five crash/freezing moment

            Looking for answers,

                Re: Calculated field expression - maximum "if" conditions?

                A UDF is fine, but is there a link to give that is easy enough to follow for Edvins (or others that follow) to understand how to build one? When I learned, I gleaned how off the messageboard over time how to do so...since then I have looked at the help file but as I already knew how, I am uncertain whether it would have been adequate as a beginning point. Of course, maybe Edvins knows about them already.....
