Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid Component Logic Check (validation)

    I have a grid component where the user may check a box (Cert SDB). If the user checks that box I want them to also enter an NAICS code. If the user doesn't check the box then I don't care if the NAICS code field is filled in or not.

    So where would I put the validation code for this? I have played with CanUpdateRecord, CanInsertRecord, BeforeValidate.... etc. I can't get the logic check to fire, nor display my message saying that the NAICS code is required.

    Thanks,

    Dan

    Dan,

    Sounds like a good place for Xbasic field validation in the field properties. Probably not necessary to use an event.

      Hi Pat,
      Well tried that but no go. I even used the built in sample for that field being blank and I do not get an error message. The field name is Lfb1_pri_naics. Below is the code I used.

      Code:
      function validate_Lfb1_pri_naics as p (e as p)
      'Sample validation function.
      'Data for the current row is available in 'e.data'. For example, e.data.firstname, e.data.lastname
      if e.data.Lfb1_pri_naics = " " then
         validate_Lfb1_pri_naics.hasError = .t.
         validate_Lfb1_pri_naics.errorText = "NAICS cannot be blank."
      end if
      end function

        Ok, I need to retract the last post. I re-published the whole application and now it is working. For some reason (strange) when I just published the component it wouldn't work. However, after repulbishing the entire app, it is working.

        Thanks,

          Well, this feature works only every so often. Sometimes it works and others it just saves the record change. No Consistancy!

          Surely there has to be a better way??

          Anyone??

          Thanks,

            Blank does seem a bit spotty. I've had better luck with

            if len(alltrim(e.data.Lfb1_pri_naics))=0 " " then

              Get Rid of the space between the quotes it may help.

              Didn't you also say that another field is part of the validate but I don't see it in the code?

              I think this is more what you are after

              if e.data.certsdb=.t. .and. e.data.naics="" then

                Hi Chad, Yeah I was testing the first code just to see if that would work. That only works intermittently, not a good sign. My actual code is

                Code:
                if e.data.Lfb1_mindkc =.T. .and. e.data.Lfb1_pri_naics = "" then
                   validate_Lfb1_pri_naics.hasError = .t.
                   validate_Lfb1_pri_naics.errorText = "NAICS cannot be blank."
                end if
                Which doesn't work at all.

                I am now trying Pat's suggestion, so my new code is
                Code:
                if e.data.Lfb1_mindkc =.T. .and. len(alltrim(e.data.Lfb1_pri_naics))=0 " " then
                   validate_Lfb1_pri_naics.hasError = .t.
                   validate_Lfb1_pri_naics.errorText = "NAICS cannot be blank."
                end if
                Which does not work either!!

                  Sorry, I neglected to remove the extra quotes after the 0

                  Should have been
                  if e.data.Lfb1_mindkc =.T. .and. len(alltrim(e.data.Lfb1_pri_naics))=0 then
                  validate_Lfb1_pri_naics.hasError = .t.

                    is it sql or should I say null field?
                    also maybe the .T. needs to be true or .t. or 1
                    I cant remember the example on that.

                    Yes Pat I saw that but I thought it was something else you are probably right.

                      Hi Pat,

                      After I got the extra characters at end of exprssion Error, I removed the quotes.

                      Still no go.

                      If anyone wants to try, I uploaded the table and component. The idea is if the user checks the Cert SDB and/or the SDB box then the NAICS field cannot be blank. Other wise the user can enter the NAICS field if they want to but it is not required.

                      Thanks,

                      Dan

                          Well Let's try this again.

                          This version should work because I unzipped it and then played with it afterwords.

                            Well, I haven't found a solution..... so I am just using the onFocus Javascript to pop up a box and let the user know the field is required if the made a prior selection.

                            Seems to me that logic checking of field entries will be the next big thing! I think Alpha needs to get more involved with this!

                              I think I would use the OnBlur event to accomplish what you want. That way the user has made their selection and you can base your logic code on that selection.
