Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Master Detail or Looksup

I wonder if someone can kindly help me with this basic example.

I have table 1 (Names) with three fields
    NameID
    FirstName
    LastName

I have table 2 (class) with 6 fields
    ClassID
    NameID
    FirstName
    LastName
    Team
    Color

I wish to be able to create new records into table 2 inserting
    NameID
    FirstName
    LastName
by selection/lookup without those fields being editable, other fields will be completed manually

I tried using Lookups but think that lookup fields need to be editable. I do not wish to allows the contents of
    NameID
    FirstName
    LastName to be editable

    Many thanks
    John

      Thanks Peter,
I find that if I try to place the lookup on a field that is changed to a label the lookup has disappeared?

Sorry, John. I misunderstood you. Right the lookup field itself needs to be editable. But you can set that field to only accept a value from the lookup table. As far as the other fill-in fields, I'm not sure. I guess they can't be labels. But you could make them editable and disable them if their value is greater than blank. So MyField="" means that the field will be editable only when it has no value.

Sorry for my delay in answering, thought I had answered but apparently not.

As soon as I tick the box and try to save I get the error attached in the image.
As usual I cannot understand what the error message is describing. I wonder can anyone?

I get those error message from time to time. They don't mean anything to me either. Usually they seem to be false negatives. Close & reload Alpha - that might help.

Yes I have closed and reloaded, no change.

Problem is I cannot save the setting because of the error message.

Should I sumit a bug report do you think?
                  Cheers

                    John,

Try to make the grid dirty in another way and save - w/o setting that checkbox.

                      Yes that did the trick.

I saved another change and then made the change to the lookup field and the error message never re appeared!
                      Great
                      Many thanks Peter.

                          Re: Master Detail or Looksup

I had a similar issue and it had to do w. patches. But in my case, I had to make certain grids dirty and save them and then they were in sync w. the patch. Why only some grids and not others may be due to the utilization of particular settings in the grid? Try creating a new grid with the settings you are after and see if that works.

But now you know that it's a problem you can solve. I get it too, from time to time. Restarting Alpha nearly always corrects it. I'd also try repacking and reindexing, and restart the computer if necessary. These have always corrected it.

                              Thanks for all the help.

I created a new grid for the same idea and the problem disappeared so maybe it was something I built in!
