Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Displaying <div> statements conditionally

    I've got four checkboxes on a webpage that are set up so that only one of them can be checked at a time and each of which, when checked, "shows" a <div>/<div> element.

    What I want to do is display the appropriate <div></div> element in the position inherited from from the parent element (which in this case is one of the checkboxes).

    All of this I've been able to do. The issue that comes up is when one of the <div></div> elements is shown, the other (though not shown) has space reserved on the page for it - leaving a gap in the flow of the page.

    Is there some way to write javascript like the following Alpha conditional so that only the element that is selected is displayed and is accessed when the page is parsed:

    <%A5 If condition1 %>
    'Do one thing
    <%A5 Else %>
    'Do something else %>
    <%A5 End If %>

    I'd appreciate any help any of you might have with this. And, I'd be happy to supply the test web page upon request.

    -Phil

    If value = something
    html = "<div>html</div>"
    else
    html = ""
    end if

    'Display resulting html
    ?html

    %>

      Id have to dig into the action javascript, but you can alter the CSS of any div using a watch event (or any client side event) to toggle the css to dislpay:none. So, <div style="display:none">...</div> would render that area null.

        Steve,

        May have been several days of struggling with this or whatever other reason, but 15 minutes after reading your post, I "got" it.

        Another hour or so of research and several failed attempts later and I've made the changes to the page that give me what I was seeking.

        Seems simple now that I figured it out.

        Thanks.

          function addCheckboxClickEvents() {
          var checkboxes = document.getElementById('cbDiv');

          if (checkboxes && checkboxes.hasChildNodes()) {
          var children = checkboxes.childNodes;

          for (var i=0;i<children.length;i++) {
          children[i].onclick = function() {
          var cbClicked = document.getElementById('div' + this.id);

          if (this.checked) {
          cbClicked.style.display = 'inherit';
          } else {
          cbClicked.style.display = 'none';
          }
          }
          }
          }
          }

          window.onload = addCheckboxClickEvents;

            Re: Displaying &lt;div&gt; statements conditionally

            I had to do this in two pieces for some reason

            HTML Code:
            <body>
            		<div id='cbDiv'>
            			<input name='cbOne' id='cbOne' type='checkbox' />
            			<input name='cbTwo' id='cbTwo' type='checkbox' />
            			<input name='cbThree' id='cbThree' type='checkbox' />
            		</div>
            		<div id='divcbOne' style='display: none'>
            			<h1>First Div</h1>
            		</div>
            		<div id='divcbTwo' style='display: none'>
            			<h1>Second Div</h1>
            		</div>
            		<div id='divcbThree' style='display: none'>
            			<h1>Three Div</h1>
            		</div>
            	</body>
            </html>
            I hope this helps.

              Parri2bd,

              Thanks for the code. I created a separate html document to test it, and did not get the 3 child <div></div> to display when the checkboxes were checked. The three checkboxes did, however display in the upper left corner of the page - 3 side by side in a row.

              Here's what I entered into the test page...

              <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
              "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
              <html>

              <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
              <title>Checkbox Test from Alpha Msg Board</title>

              <!--
              function addCheckboxClickEvents() {
              var checkboxes = document.getElementById('cbDiv');

              if (checkboxes && checkboxes.hasChildNodes()) {
              var children = checkboxes.childNodes;

              for (var i=0;i<children.length;i++) {
              children[i].onclick = function() {
              var cbClicked = document.getElementById('div' + this.id);

              if (this.checked) {
              cbClicked.style.display = 'inherit';
              } else {
              cbClicked.style.display = 'none';
              }
              }
              }
              }
              }
              window.onload = addCheckboxClickEvents;
              //-->

              </head>

              <body>
              <div id='cbDiv'>
              <input name='cbOne' id='cbOne' type='checkbox' />
              <input name='cbTwo' id='cbTwo' type='checkbox' />
              <input name='cbThree' id='cbThree' type='checkbox' />
              </div>
              <div id='divcbOne' style='display: none'>
              <h1>First Div</h1>
              </div>
              <div id='divcbTwo' style='display: none'>
              <h1>Second Div</h1>
              </div>
              <div id='divcbThree' style='display: none'>
              <h1>Three Div</h1>
              </div>
              </body>
              </html>

              Can you see anything obvious that I neglected in entering this?

              Thanks.

                  Yes, I did comment the function out.

                  I ran it without commenting it out, and the function itself displayed on our test page.

                  Note your recent post was not fully displayed. Will you please complete it as part of your response to this post?

                  Thanks.

                    you need to wrap the javascript in
                    HTML Code:
                    <script></script>
                    tags.
