Default fill fields from another table, break down fields

I have a table that has all agents in the country with multiple license numbers because an agent can have a license in more than one state. This data coming in is in all different formats and fields. Sometimes it comes in one field as all license types and sometimes it is in a separate row so all other info like, name, lic number is redundant. The final table is used for a mailing list but needs to be queried by license type agent has.
I've uploaded ALL data by state into one table that has "lic_type" field which now needs to be broken down into 4-5 different fields. I need to be able to break it down by syntax. In other words "If Lic_type field contains "blah" then put "blah" into Blah Field, if Lic_type field contains "o" then put o into o field". The link is license number. (this can also be done in the same table)
Q1. What is the code to do this with Alpha Five?
Q2. How do I update only certain fields from another table? This is a mailing list and needs to be maintained.
Please, please someone help me with this. I am new to Alpha Five but have programmed simple things with VB, so I can get it fast.

    Hi Senia,
Q1. What is the code to do this with Alpha Five?
Have a look at Update in operations.
How do I update only certain fields from another table?
Have a look at Posting in operations.

Sorry I cant be more specific than that as there is no syntax for "blah" then put "blah" into Blah Field

Also have a look at here for character extractions. This is the best page to do a lot of what you want.

Thank you. I tried the update and it worked well. I still have to try using other things. I think, I might be able to solve it with a query first and then update only certain fields....I'll let you know how it goes.
