Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Re: scheduled emails

What I do is a little more involved, I also don't rely on the Alpha scheduling function. I use CRON and CURL, two public domain programs. You'd want to find those utilities on the web and study.

My CRONTAB file might have something like this:

      * * * * 0 cron_alerts.bat

Which in CRON language means run that batch file ever Sunday at 12:01 AM

And the batch file something like this:

      Code:
      curl.exe -k -d "A5W_Sess_ID=1" https://www.mydomain.com/alerts_run1.a5w
The A5W_Sess_ID is mandatory with an arbitrary value.

And the alerts_run1.a5w page would have whatever code I want to run on schedule. It would also have this code at the top to prohibit anyone running the page in their browser>:

      Code:
      if Request.referer = ""
      ?"Sorry, no local access."
      end
      end if

        Re: scheduled emails

thanks for these. ill check it out.

what i am trying to achieve is a complicated email system. i need to send a series of emails to each customer depending upon where the customer is in the sales process.

        with CRON and CURL would i be right in thinking;

        1. i create a a.5w page which send the email to filtered records (based upon field values)

        2. create the CRON file which will run the .a5w page at a given day/time.

it may be that i have 20 different emails going out each day to customers at different stages of the sales process, is this still achievable with CRON?

        thanks again

          Re: scheduled emails

CRON/CURL just kicks off the a5w page, so whatever you are able to program, it will do.

Here is my code the scheduling function is at the very end and its scheduling the next run at 10 pm (22:00) and will continue to reschedule it as long as alpha is on

Note:In this case you have to run the script 1 time so this cycle can begin (can be added in the Auto-run file).

                Re: scheduled emails

One way I've done this in the past is via the OnTimer event on an A5 page. You create an Admin_Timer page for example, then in the OnTimer event, you run a script, say every hour or so. The script would have in it the various things you would want to do.

To me this is easier as you can extract details from dbf's, sort them, create the email, populate it with data and then send it. I like to add a log file so that I know if it is working or not at the prescribed time.

One thing I do is use this function to FTP files from one server to another each hour in order to keep it refreshed, but you can use this idea for most anything.

If you need more help on this, let me know.

                    Guys,

I am trying to utilise the cURL utility, but it states that it does not support https.

                    Code:
                    curl.exe -k -d "A5W_Sess_ID=1" https://mysite.a5w
                    Any ideas anyone?

                      Re: scheduled emails

The solution is to go to http://curl.haxx.se/ and download the SSL enabled file.

                        Re: scheduled emails

Its been a while since i started this but i now really want to get these emails working.

so far, i have installed cURL, created a batch file with this when i click this batch file it opens a browser and opens the .a5w page which only has xbasic. the xbasic runs ok which at present is just sending me a test email.

am i on the right track? how do i get the batch file to run without me clicking it? and is opening a browser window the right way to do it? if so how would i close the browser once the script has run?

                        thanks again for the help.

Your method is not using Curl at all. I will draw up the steps.

OK, i think i am now using cURL. I have the email being sent without the browser launching. now i just need to get the batch file to be automatically run.
