Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    user self registration

I have been struggling with this for some time. I want a user to be able to add himself to a customer table and to users and groups. The goal a comprehensive completely automated self registration sequence

Adding a customer through a grid component is easy.

I also created the add web user dialog component in the help that was a little harder. This example allows a user to choose his own group. I would choose administrator. How about you? This I suspect can be modified to a hidden assigned group. How to accomplish this would be helpful.

I also figured out how to code a designated redirect page rather than using a dynamic drop down box of available pages. That was a one liner that took many hours. It should have been included in the tutorial which would have been a two liner.

Now the answer I need. How do you take the customer ID field and populate the external user ID field in security? Can the add user dialog component be used to accomplish this while adding user ID and password?

I searched the posts for this but found more questions than answers. Martin this is a very foggy area in the cloud.

My "Missing Link Post" asks why this cannot all be accomplished with a grid component. If not a grid component, than why not a single dialog component?
I'll settle for a two or more step process if some one can provide an example of this or explain it properly.

    Much appreciated,
    Bob

    Bob,

You might want to take a look at what Steve Wood is offering in his Web Application Framework. It looks like it can save a zillion hours on some of the stuff that has to be put in place for a web application.

It can be done w. a grid. There is a "lot" of help regarding security in the WiKI, but the authors assume too much. There are many holes in their explanations.

          Re: user self registration

Thanks guys for your replies. I've seen Steve's framework and have talked to him by phone. It does look like a time saver, but I am really looking to accomplish this from the ground up.

I don't see why its such a mystery. It seems like its a matter of writing the Id field in a db or sql table to the external user id field in security.

            Re: user self registration (ulinkup)

I found the section on the wiki explaining the options for accomplishing this ulinkup. Its a brain twister.

I am going to see if the demo can be used as a template.
I sent Martin a private message asking him for a comprehensive tutorial on this.

I also asked alpha to develop V10 grid options that would simplify and makes this ulinkup codeless.

            Tks

You will get better support from alphatogo (Steve) on this topic than you will from alphasoftware.

                Re: user self registration

I just posted elsewhere about the release of my web framework. I think I should carve the user reg portion out of that and make it available along with some document guidance. User reg becomes quite involved once you consider all the factors, unsubscribe, user mgmt, encryption, etc. But its a worthwhile thing to define in a good document. There are also many types of registration - single opt in, double opt in, account match (like where you register with your phone company and they match you up with your account based on private info you provide.

                  Thanks Steve,

I'm told that it will eventually be an option in the grid.

That would be amazing, I would definitely look into purchasing that.

This page: (http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/Creati...Security+Users) says how user reg can be done in one single page, but it doesn't tell us how :-(

INdividual functions like adding a user, or deleting a user from security can be added to a single grid, but the 'process' of registering a user is multi-step and takes place over an indeterminate amount of time, so it cannot be added to a component, per se.

                        Re: user self registration

I see it as a view in the grid. Pulling together the security table and the database table.

The grid properties and server events are selected as options to achieve different self registration functions.

Start by listing the most common scenarios. Map the common and uncommon construction of each scenario.

It would be nice if you can include email notification with an auto generated initial password while your at it.

Steve is your framework adapted for V10 ?
