Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Web apps Demo

In looking at the web apps demo, there is a section called Grids. It uses the grids.a5w form to display all of the grids. (At least, that is what displays in the browser bar.

However, that a5w page is very small, and I don't really understand it.

How do I know which grids/components are being displayed on each of the tabs?

Also, could someone direct me - I only want to use Version 10 components. I do not want to start learing about components that have been removed since version 9, such as the web linking component. I feel that looking at those sections would be a waste of time.

Could someone please direct me to the sections of the web tutorial that would best describe the grid linking process to me and which version 10 web components and forms I should check out in the sample application?

I think the tabs identify the types of grids and their key features quite well. I'm not sure what you're not understanding. Can you select one that you don't understand and explain what additional information you're seeking?

I think that the various pieces shown here constitute a pretty good collection of V10 components, and make a good starting point for good competency in A5.

The Layout Formatting and Linked Grids examples are pretty good. User the wiki, and search for terms like "Linked Content", "Linked Grids" and "Row Expander". A lot of this is found, demonstrated and discussed as well in the "What's New in Version 10", found here:

Steve, I'm not saying that the examples aren't good. They do show features quite well.

I can run the app from my IE browser and SEE all the things happen.

But then I don't know which A5W or Grid files to open in Alpha 5 design mode to see how each one was built.

I'm sure the information is there somewhere, but I haven't found it.

How do I link the app pages that I can view to pages I can design?

Obviously the code/information is there but you have to find it yourself. Usually basic description is given but details you have to find yourself directly from properties/events. Very time consuming and frustrating job.

I think this is a demonstration of different kinds of grids and their features. I don't expect that there's a direct link or example to any pre-built examples that you have in your A5 installation.

It's too bad that they don't have the name of each grid & object in the samples so that you could find the one you are looking for. Yes, very frustrating.

With respect to v10, just don't use dialogs, & grid linker or tabbed grid linkers if you want to be "v10 pure". Having said that, dialogs still offer a certain benefit in some cases. V11 will have a new dialog. But you could use a grid w. a bunch of unbound fields to mimic a dialog if you like.
