Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using HTML editor for simple HTML

Is there a method to disable the extra HTML?

Re: Using HTML editor for simple HTML

James, you've posted to the wrong message board forum, it seems. Questions about web pages and the Alpha Five application server aren't well exposed when dropped into this "desktop applications" forum. Many of us "desktop" veterans don't know much about web apps. I suggest you try re-posting to the app server forum corresponding to the version you're using. You greatly improve the chances that your question will be read by someone who can help you. Good luck. -- tom

Re: Using HTML editor for simple HTML

      Hi there Tom,

This is a desktop application. I have HTML memo fields in my table that I would like to insert into a xbasic script. But the editor automatically places the extra text into the field.

I was hoping there was a method to disable it. If not do you think it would be best that I just use xbasic to extract text between the <body></body> tags?

      James

Hello, James. Sorry to say, but I have no direct personal experience with this. Which, now that I think about it, probably explains why I mistook your post in the first place. -- tom

No, at least I don't think so based on my experience.

I take it you are wanting to extract some of the html code out of saved html memo fields for use elsewhere. Is that correct? If so, I think you would have to resort to xbasic to get the part you want.

Re: Using HTML editor for simple HTML

The preferred solution would be to have the memo field store only the HTML that I had entered. This is because I am taking this description and generating a eBay listing template and I only need the code for the listing itself and not the page. I was hoping to avoid xbasic but if thats the best solution then I will start coding.

                Thanks

A thought: Would the "added" html code cause any problems for your ebay page? I certainly don't know, but I use html from memo fileds that contain that "added" code in html email messages and so far have not heard of any problems recipients have had--they seem to see exactly and only what I wanted them to see when they open their emails.

Re: Using HTML editor for simple HTML

The HTML editor I use has 3 tabs - WYSIWYG, Source, and Interactive. A5 will add "other stuff" when you type something in the WYSIWYG window. Also, if you type certain things in the Source window then view it in the WYSIWYG window it may get modified. As it happens, all my web apps (2) are pure code - no web components - so I only use the Source tab and avoid the WYSIWYG tab like the plague. (My two web customers demand pages that present 500 to over 5000 lines/records per page. This is, or at least was, an impossible task with web components but the 5000 lines can appear in about 12 seconds on a decent connection - it's about a 750K download.)

The HTML editor I'm talking about is reached by clicking View / HTML Editor in the main menu bar.

If you are using a different editor, let me know how you are getting to it. Maybe I can find a way help but certainly I can learn something new.

                      Cal,

When I edit a html memo field it opens up with only the wysiwyg and the source tab. I set the default tab to open as the source tab. If I view the wysiwyg tab after entering basic html in the source tab the extra code is inserted. The extra code is also inserted if i save and exit the editor.

I had not known about the other editor but i did see the three tabs that you mentioned when i opened it. Would it be better if i used a RTF field instead of an html one? Currently my solution is to just extract all text between the <body> and </body> tags and ignore all the other text.

                      James

As you may have noticed - I avoid the WYSIWYG editor like the plague. I also haven't used HTML memo fields much so I'm not the expert on that.

As for RTF memo fields, I also avoid those completely. I had far too many problems with them in the past.

I think Ray's ideas are probably the best solutions.
