Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Where to put javascript functions?

    I'm wanting to create a few general javascript functions on a form, but can't seem to get them to load onto the form. I've entered the functions in the javascript file for the database, I've tried them in the different tabbed sections of the javascript entry window.

    Does a javascript routine have to reference the functions at build time for them to be included in the form, and where do I put them for general use in my routines?

    The three major requirements of making a product user-friendly...
    Documentation, documentation, documentation.

    Wherefore art thou, documentation?

    Does anyone have a link to some A5v10 documentation on client-side scripting, please. That's javascript, not Xbasic.

    Thanks in advance,
    Trev Jones

    Re: Where to put javascript functions?

    Where you put your javascript depends on what you want it to do.

    Maybe take one of your needs, describe it to us, and we'll suggest the appropriate place in the grid design.

      Re: Where to put javascript functions?

      Thanks for the reply, Steve.

      I've got a web form with Surname, Forenames and Title fields, and have a common function to Capitalise a passed string, which I want to call from each field's OnChanged event.

      I can't seem to find any detailed A5v10 information on using javascript anywhere. Do you know of any reference material on the subject? I think maybe I'm missing a link to it, or can't see it right under my nose on Alphapedia.

        Re: Where to put javascript functions?

        if you look at the properties of any field on a grid you will see a JavaScript events sections with all the possible events (like OnChange) you can use Action JavaScript (wizard like predefined functions) or go into text mode and do the magic

          Re: Where to put javascript functions?

          I can't get my javascript "calls" to work when using functions.

          I have a Detail form containing a field called SURNAME.
          I've put the following script in the "Javascript - Attribute" tab of the SURNAME OnChange event:-

          var cName = {grid.Object}._getValue('D','SURNAME');
          cName = allProper(cName,' ');
          {grid.Object}.setValue('D','SURNAME',cName);

          I also intend calling the function from other field's OnChange events, and the code is:-

          // In 'cStr', capitalise the 1st char and char immediately after all occurrences of the 'cAfter' char.
          // e.g. allProper('lilly-smythe','-'); returns 'Lilly-Smythe',
          // and allProper('lilly smythe',' '); returns 'Lilly Smythe',
          // and allProper('o'smythe','\''); returns 'O'Smythe'.

          function allProper{Grid.rowNumber}(cStr,cAfter)
          {
          var cName = cStr.substr(0,1).toUpperCase() + cStr.substr(1,cStr.length);
          var aNames = cName.split(cAfter);

          if (aNames.length > 1)
          {
          cName = '';
          for (i = 0; i < aNames.length; i++)
          {
          if (aNames[i].length > 0)
          cName += aNames[i].substr(0,1).toUpperCase() + aNames[i].substr(1,aNames[i].length) + cAfter;
          }
          cName = cName.substr(0,cName.length - 1);
          }

          return cName;
          }

          I don't know on which tab, or where else, to put the function, which I expect to appear in maybe the <head> section of the HTML document, but isn't there when I "view source" of the built page.

          The "Declarations - Row level" and "Declarations - Global" tabs don't place the function anywhere, and don't sound like the correct places to put the code.

          I've even created a Functions.js file for the function, but due to lack of documentation, I don't even know the purpose of Javascript files in A5v10, or how to incorporate their code into web forms.

          Everyone seems to ignore my requests for links to client-side scripting documentation. Is this because there isn't any?

            Re: Where to put javascript functions?

            A function that you want to call from various points in the grid can be established by going to the Grid Properties, and nearly at the bottom inserting your function in the Javascript Function Declarations.

              Thanks, Steve.

              I'm not using the Grid, just the Detail View, and it never occurred to me to look in the Grid properties.

              I have noticed, though, that you've bypassed my query about documentation.

              All the docs I've found seem to relate to desk top or seemingly earlier versions of the client-side. IS there any A5v10 client-side documentation in existence at this time, or am I missing something obvious in my searches? I'm meaning reference info and examples of the Helper functions and place-holders for starters.

                A good place to start is the Alpha Wiki. Search for Javascript and you'll find a lot of information, some guides, examples, etc.
