Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A4V3, looking to upgrade to A4V8

    Hello,

I'm doing IT support for a company with one user running A4V3 with a database of about 1000 records. Things were fine for her until we got her a new computer. She's now using Windows 7, with XP Mode to support her legacy apps. For those unfamiliar with XP Mode, it's a virtual machine, a la Virtual PC. Printers are shared from the host machine as they would be in a Terminal Server session. You can't reference a port like LPT1, unless I'm missing something.

I know this software is dangerously out of date- I've read of corruption when running this version on XP. I'd like them to upgrade to V8, both for stability and to resolve their printing issues.

I'm not familiar with Alpha4 beyond the very basics, and I don't plan on getting to know it- it's not something I want to bring under my umbrella at this time (and the person who set this up originally is now gone). As their IT consultant, I need to make sure that their IT resources are used properly and advise them when it's time for upgrades, especially for Line-Of-Business apps.

So, I'm looking for someone in the NYC area who can advise my client on the proper procedure for upgrading Alpha4, maintaining the application, and configuring printing. If you're not local, perhaps we can work together remotely.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. If you think you're right for the job, PM me for my phone number or email address.

    Neil:
I am not sure you will find anyone that wants to get into dealing with the non-compatible OS issues with old versions of Alpha.

You probably could provide the same functionality with a new version of Alpha (Alpha 5 V10) in less time then it would take for you to figure out porting the old Alpha app...and then of course, even if you were successful, you will have to maintain it. Not something I would want to do.

      Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. I don't really want to be involved in upgrading or maintaining this application at all, I am simply searching on behalf of my client. If I could find an Alpha Pro to help them upgrade to A5v10, all the better. I'm not interested in involving myself with this app beyond making a simple introduction.

So whether it's porting the existing A4 app to A5, or rebuilding the app completely under A5, that's all something I'd want discussed by more capable DB techs than I, with my client.

So, if you're in the tristate area or know someone who is, give me a call. I guess I should revise my thread title to indicate that I'm fine with a move to A5 as well.

      Cheers
