Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can you integrate a desktop app with the web app?

I am new to the web application side of A5 - I have worked in the desktop side for years - starting with A4v2....we are currently using A5v8.* I watched the Getting Started Videos for v10 and had to choose if I wanted to see the Web app or Desktop app....but my question is - Can I put certain fields of the desktop app on the web, have them filled in by a user, and have that field 'answer' then show in the desktop app?* Would it be a "live" update on the desktop side? We need to keep our desktop apps running as not all of our users, clients, etc - (believe it or not) - have computers or are allowed to use the internet at their offices. I am anxious to give this web thing a try, but need to know if this will work.* Thanks in advance for any insight.

I know you can do this. I saw it done(results), although in a different context.

    desktop app for car dealer:

almost everything is done on the desktop, but, the used car manager can add vehicles to the inventory by way of the web. He could also add them from the desktop at work instead of remotely by the web. Prior to a web grid, vpm was used. Prior to that, he added them to a table in a laptop and they were added to the inventory by appending.

To the best of my knowledge, you could have a database with many tables that you could add/edit/delete records and run reports from either web or desktop. I hope this is true because I will be doing it in the near future.

    Hope I helped

Re: Can you integrate a desktop app with the web app?

I have an app (auto leasing and management co.) that's been running mostly desktop since late '90s. over the last few years we've opened bits of it to the web for customers and others.

Got another newish one where employee scheduling is done with desktop tools, but many part of it are exposed for employee information and interaction on the web side.

So, yes, the two can work together quite nicely.

Re: Can you integrate a desktop app with the web app?

Once you've been through the tutorial, consider this: You can now run Web grids on the desktop. So if you add capabilities to the web site of your application with grids, you can reuse the grids on the desktop side.

                  Hi Eric,

That is a great video to demonstrate using a grid on a desktop form, what build of Alpha did you do that in?

Is it possible to show us a video of how you put the grid onto a form?
                  Regards

                    Keith,

I use version 10.5 and some stuff from the feature pack.
In the next couple of days I place it on the board.

I found two video's from Selwyn that explains everything

Add ons.... looking at the Add On software.. Being that I want to use our current desktop app and have parts of it available on the web, is the Upsize Database Genie a wise investment? Also the Flying Start Genie has me intrigued. It looks so easy which is why I am weary... the old addage.. if it looks to good to be true...!!! Anyone care to comment on these?

Re: Can you integrate a desktop app with the web app?

                        Terri,

Thats the basic point of the new genies.

File upsize migrates your dbf to a backend easy with active links
Next feature is the Desktop Grid availability where you can use Grid inside the desktop.
I migrated 60-70 tables to a SQLSERVER in 30 minutes.
There is auto help in the Genie making the good choices or warns is something cannot be done
Condition for succes is that you a good DB design.

                          Keith , all is well?

It'done by the feature pack options [desktop grid]
I make a video how it's done later this week.
If you need further help send pm how to implement and make this available to you customer in hybrid mode let me know. Beside the desktop grid there a other things to keep in mind at the backend level
