Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5 MySQL and Navicat Server Connections

I am using Mysql as a database in conjuction with Navicat.

I am having some trouble getting Alpha5 to connect to MySQL when placed on a server. Everything works fine on my local developer machine.

On the server alpha5 works OK until I try to open a MySQL database connected item. Then it fails.

In Navicat there is a selection of Data Transfer.

I am not clear on how that is supposed to work.
There is a demo at http://support.navicat.com/visual_tu..._transfer.html
Which I think shows getting connections between the server and the developer machine but I cannot see how this is carried out and I am not clear on whether this is being carried out on the server or the developer.

I wonder if anyone can help clarify this for me please?
    Thank
    John

Re: A5 MySQL and Navicat Server Connections

Can you provide more detail on your process? It's not entirely clear whether your "works ok until..." step has the web browser (A5 app) open on the server or remotely. If remotely, you need to check firewall and other security settings.

And when the process/connection fails, what (if any) error message do you see?

As to Navicat data transfer: I've used it a number of times. I view it primarily as a migration tool. For example, I test using my local DB server. Then, once things are ready to go, I transfer to my remote VPS DB. It's essentially a real-time GUI-based dump/import application. Select source DB & table on left side, destination DB and table on right side, pull the trigger. I've found it much handier (for SMALL databases) than the dump, zip, ftp, unzip, import procedure I'd otherwise use.

Re: A5 MySQL and Navicat Server Connections

      Thanks for the answer Jon

The server is a windows 2003 server on a machine here connected to the internet.
On this server I can open the domain. The domain is being forwarded by the registration agent.
When I open this domain on the server the part of the site which is not dependent on the MySQL database is working correctly. The error comes when I try to open a page which is connected to MySQL

I suspect its because I have not uploaded the MySQL tables correctly and cant think how to do this via DataTransfer.
      The error I receive is:

Could not get count of records in query.
      Database API specific error

Your database has returned the following error code and description to Alpha Five.
Consult your database documentation for further information.

      1146 - 'Table 'padlis.affiliatemaster' doesn't exist'
I am attaching an image of the data transfer screen with my comments

Re: A5 MySQL and Navicat Server Connections

I've examined your screen shot & comments. Before you can use data transfer, you must first create Navicat connections to both databases. Once you have done so, you can click the dropdown in the right data transfer pane.

Alternatively, you can open your source database, right click on the DB, and (from the context menu) "Dump SQL File". Then open your destination database (after creating the Navicat connection) and "Execute SQL File" to import your database.

          Thanks
It looks like I now have some publishing problems so I will come back to this as soon as I can resolve these.
