Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

        Thanks for asking Peter.
Imagine being hungry and you are presented with a scrumptious soup and a fork. That's Alpha five.
The difficulty is not how to build a grid or how to link a child grid to a parent grid or how to arrange your components on a page. The video library explains this well.
The big difficulty is with Javascript and Ajax callback. Example when you put a button on a grid in onclick --> Action Javascript --> inline javascript. In there there are "insert placeholder" and "Insert grid method" hyperlinks. We need a few examples on how to use these; when and how to use these placeholders and these grid methods. A few how-to examples for each grid method will help a lot. Same with Ajax Callback: In Action Javascript there is Ajax callback: when and how to use to use it.

We need many varied examples on how to move and set values from one grid to another using scripts, how to use javascript and ajax callbacks. When do we use one and not the other.

For example how to set a value in a field in parent grid with the sum of records from child grid. Another expl: With 2 grids on a page Grid1 and Grid2, from a button in grid2 how to create a new record in grid1 and insert in the newly created record a value from grid2.
        etc... etc...

You are absolutely correct with all the above.

It is a bear when you don't know the "secret"(s). But what you describe is all doable.

That said, Heller's Vol. 1 is a very good book, but it doesn't tell you the "secrets" you are looking for.

            Peter - Both of you

If you would take a moment and look at the attached image.

I would like to create a menu that looks like the attached image in AlphaFive. Their is a row of 4 buttons on the top and five buttons on the bottom.

When you press a button it takes you to another webform with a grid etc.

If you have not logged in it will prompt you to do so.

Nothing fancy, but since AlphaFive is new to me I do not know where to begin.

If you can make a video on how to

            1. Add a background to the Form
            2. Add a button to the Form that opens up another Form
            3. Forces you to Login

It would be a place to start.

I got Heller's book as a package when I bought a copy of V10 recently. Most of what's in the book is also explained in the videos. If Vol.2 does not reveal these "secrets" and just keeps rehashing what's already in the video library I won't buy it.
A board member (Bob Moore) posted a video that was helpful (Thanks Bob); we need many more like this.

                  ...
I disagree. Heller's book is a good introduction to grid functionality, the core of A5 web. It's useful to many people. Personally, I wish that everything in the videos was in a hard copy book. That said, I too hope that the so-called secrets are laid out in the next book or two. There is no substitute for hard copy reference.

The remaining two volumes should be a priority to get finished, not put off as a "when we get a chance". There are numerous posts on this board referencing Heller's incomplete book and the lack of quality documentation or instruction so the demand is there.

Come on Martin and Alpha, please finish the book or at least give us some kind of idea when we can expect it.

Something along the lines of how to get and set values from fields between linked parent-child grids. Anything along the lines of what Gary_H proposes would be good for me.

                          Many thanks
