Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Age Calculation using SQL Backend

    We are trying to calculate the Age using a calculated field on a detail view.

    We are struggling as Alpha reports that our linked table field called dateofbirth is a type 'T', not a 'D'.

    Does anyone have any experience in how to compute the age? The age() function doesn't seem to work and we are stuck.

    Thanks

    Alan

    Is the date of birth field a datetime field?

      Re: Age Calculation using SQL Backend

      Yes it is a date time field.

      We managed to overcome this problem by adding it as an event in the can update.

      If you know of any other way to do this on one of the javascripts routines or a button command to update the Age field. That would be very helpful.

      Thank you

        Is their any reason why you are not using a view for this?

        This way the AGE field will always be correct.

              Hi Govindan,

              Haven't been on site for a few months. My original age calculations for the South African motorcycle competitors worked after you helped me. If you recall, I needed to calculate the age of a competitor as at the 1st of January of the same year.

              Guess what??????

              They changed the rules this year. NOW a valid age are calculated by the current year. Meaning;
              If a competitor needs to be 16 for a certain race class in 2015, then that competitor MUST turn 16 at anytime during 2015. Age is calculated from January to December. How do I validate this? The validation must check if I became 16 during this year or will be turning 16 during this year. bummer!!!!!

                Re: Age Calculation using SQL Backend

                why not check their age on dec 31st current year.
                if they are 16 they are good to go
                alpha does provide age function as of some date.
                take a look at age function.
                I see you want it in sql backend.
                I have code in code archive I will post a link to it soon.

                  Hi Gandi,

                  For some reason I am not able to get this working at all. I'm so frustrated with my inabilities at this moment. I need to check the age at 31 dec 2015.
                  I have my 3 fields on a "new record" grid;
                  1. DOB
                  2. NewDate [The date 31 dec 2015]
                  3. Age [Numeric]

                  Using the age() function or the examples you gave me just don't seem to calculate. I tried the age() function on a calculated field, as a javascript function etc. no response. As a matter of fact when I try it on a calculated "age" field, the grid actually dispalys ALL items that I had hidden with the client side "show/hide expression". Clearly i'm not doing it right.

                  Questions;
                  Can I use the age() function?
                  If yes, where would be the best place to run this function on a "new record" grid.
                  The DOB date is passed to the new record screen by means of a selection in a drop down box. It then fills in various values required in the "new record" screen.

                  You're assistance will be highly appreciated.

                        Re: Age Calculation using SQL Backend

                        If this will help: the basic age calculation is (currentdate-birthdate)/365.25 or (anychosendate-birthdate)/365.25
                        I was using this before alpha came with an age() function.
