Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Need SQL expert help

I am using the SQL::ResultSet::ToOpenTable() function but I have run upon an issue I cannot resolve. The sql table I am connecting to has field (column) names with dashes in them. For instance st-addr. Apparently dbf files do allow field names with dashes so they are converted to underscore. Thus st-addr becomes st_addr. Since SQL::ResultSet::ToOpenTable() requires that the column names match exactly the function gives an error. st-addr does not match st_addr. I tried using as, as in [st-addr] AS st_addr but that did not work.

    Any ideas?

PS I bet I don't get many replies on this one!

    Let me get this straight

    1. DBF Files "DO NOT Allow" st-addr ( but they change it to st_addr ).

    2. SQL Files "DO ALLOW" st-addr.

If this is "Correct" then do the following in your SQL Select Statement.

    Select a, b, c, st-addr as st_addr, e, etc From Table XXX

    or

    Select a, b, c, [st-addr] as [st_addr], e, etc From Table XXX

Please inform the Group if the solution works.

If you use the import option it imports just fine. It changes the st-addr to st_addr and everything is fine.

If you try to make a dbf field name to st-addr it will change it to st_addr. This is a dbf thing. You can try it by changing the name of some field to something with a - in it and see what I mean.

I tried Select a, b, c, st-addr as st_addr, e, etc From Table XXX earlier and it did not work.

I'll try it with [st-addr] AS [st_addr] and see what happens and let you know.

I tried using the xbasic code from the import operation and it worked fine on the desktop but gave a stack underflow or overflow error when run from an a5w page.

If you are using MSSQL you will need to use the example with the [st_addr] as [st-addr].

For some reason MS does not like the MINUS Sign in the middle of field names.

Sql is trying to subtract addr from st try enclosing it in `st-addr` which contains it. Maybe worth a try.

You are correct - that is why you cannot use "st-addr" as a valid field name in MSSQL.

However you can use the following to create the output name as I have just verified it using MSSQL 2008 R2.

            Select [st_addr] AS [st-addr]
            from Table

Thanks for all of the help. This is a Progress database. The import function works and takes care of the - issues. Unfortunately, I was not able to run the import from the server. It gave a stack error.

The problem with the - is when using the SQL::ResultSet::ToOpenTable() function.

Everything pretty much works fine with the ODBC driver for Progress in case anyone is interested.

I'll keep fooling with it and post the results if I get it to work.
