Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Child Table Saved Browse

We have a set based on tables in 2 separate folders. The parent table is in "g:\Medicaid", and the child table is in "g:\casereg". Under version5 and version 9, this hasn't been a problem.

We have a form based on the set, and a browse on the form is a named browse for a child table in the "g:\casereg" folder. We cannot select the named browse to place on the form when designing it. see attached picture.

all tables are defined in the database.

Has anyone else run into this type of issue?

    Thanks,

    Tom

Is there any chance that when you created the named browse you created it against the set rather than the table in the set. If you created the named browse against the set then it would not show up in the available named browses for that set. If you create the named browse against the table in the set, it will show to be available as I understand it.

      FWIW

        Tom,
Thanks for responding. I thought I was allalone in the dark.

No. The browse is based on the table, not the set. The problem, I think, arises from the fact that the child table is in a separate folder than the Parent table.

        Parent: G:\Medicaid\Medicaid.dbf
        Child: G:\casereg\househol.dbf

This works fine in ver 5. We've been using this setup for years. Our customer information tables are all in one folder, and the specific program tables are in their own separate folders. Sets link the customer information to the programs by customer id (ssn).

I looked back at version 9, and the same problem occurs.

When we attempt to select a specified browse layout name, it is greyed out, unaccessable.

My feeling is that ALpha is having a real hard time resolving the path for the child table, so it just doesn't give me any objects.

          Tom

I have test app. It is one folder. I added a table from a completely different folder to that app and created a set based on the parent from the folder of the application and a child from that other folder.

I then created a named browse based on that child from the other folder.

I then created a form based on that set.

Opened in design mode added several fields from the parent and then added a browse object to the form. When the genie came I checked many and then at the very bottom checked the radio button for named browse and then when I clicked the down arrow to get the names of the available named browses, the one that I created from the table in the other folder was there and was available.

Alpha had no problem with that browse even though it was based on a table from another folder than the parent. (I know alpha warns you of potential problems when you add a table that is not in folder of the main application.)

What I am doing that you are not.

I tried the same app in Version 9 and it worked the same.

            Tom,

I just did with 2 tables exactly what you did. I created a set based on the "Medicaid" table. Child table is "Househol". same scenario as before.

I created a form based on the set. took some fields from the parent table, dropped them on the form. using the genie, I created a browse object based on the one-to-many link to the househol table. Attached, please note that the "saved browse layout" selection is grayed out. see attached...

Is your child table in a subfolder of the parent table?

            Boy, am I confused!

Interestingly enough, I was able to duplicate the scenario properly on my "C" Drive.

I creates a folder "a5apps", created 2 subfolders "Medicaid" and "casereg"

I duplicated our tables from the server into the local folders without data, of course.

I then created a set using the same setup as on the server.

Then created a form based on the set. I was ableto select fields from the parent, also from the one-to-one connection to the "client" table, and then, magically, I was able to select a saved browse layout for the one-to-many child "househol".

This seems like it is some sort of issue when we use network drives instead of a local path.

              Will continue to look further.

To answer the question about the child being in a sub folder of the parent - no I created a completely new folder and added a table to it. I then used that table (add table to database) - got the warning that I was adding a table not in the parent folder - and then proceeded to create the form, just as you did in the last post.

But they both were on C drive

                  Re: Child Table Saved Browse

                  Did some more experimenting...

When we copied the table househol.dbf (8 character table name) to househ.dbf (6 character table name), then rebuilt the set using the new table name, all other things being the same, we were able to find all the named browses. So, it seems that when using server-based tables, we need to use shorter table names.

This is going to be a tough row to hoe as that table (Househol) is used in many of our systems. It is part of the client information piece which is used everywhere!!

Table name length is a new one to me - you might want to e-mail Selwyn with that one.
