Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Select String with Double Quotes in MySQL

    I'm storing a string that includes, by necessity, double quotes, e.g.:

    This is "my" example.

    I can't figure out how to retrieve that string with the double quotes intact. Instead I get the double quotes replaced by two single quotes e.g.

    This is ''my'' example. (I know it's hard to tell the difference here)

    I've tried both a regular SELECT statement and SQL_Lookup with the same results.

    it is possible to change 2 single quotes to 1 double quote like this

    strtran("this is ''My'' Example","''","\"" )
    =this is "My" Example
    Cheers

      Because of the type of data (language translations) I'm storing that includes quoted material, I don't think this approach is a good idea. Thought of that, but would prefer to just get out what I put in.

        Steve,

        You could strtran the quotes to their chr() representation ( 32 I think )when you save it.

          Well, I guess ya'll are answering my question. There is no way to retrieve double-quotes from a string in MySQL. Seems odd to me.

          So, guess I'll re-work my storage string and convert it back out after retrieval. Given what I'm doing I hoped to avoid that.

          Thanks.

            Steve, I havent had time to follow up, but I wonder if arguments are your answer. I know that using arguments in the cn.execute() command will solve lots of problems for INPUT, not sure how it relates to output (Select). For input it sanitizes the data and double quotes going in would not be a problem.

              Thanks Steve. I got the double quotes into the string and stored in the table just fine. Getting them out was the problem. I changed my method, and am just storing "^^" and stritran() it on the way back out with chr(32). I was just hoping to be able to skip this step, but it's not a huge deal.

                It has to be technically possible because any one anywhere could enter data in any online text field with double quotes embedded. How is it handled by someone building a system in another language?

                    I saw something that said you could double the double quotes

                    SELECT * FROM SomeWhere
                    WHERE SomeThing = "He said, ""Don't do it!""';

                      Steve,

                      When I run the following I get the proper double quotes on all responses. Using MySQL. Are you sure your string is getting saved with double quotes in the first place?

                      field contents = [ My "Company" B ] without the brackets.

                      dim cn as SQL::Connection
                      dim rs as SQL::ResultSet
                      cn.open("::name::conn")
                      vSelect = "SELECT name FROM company"
                      cn.execute(vSelect)
                      ?cn.resultset.data("name")
                      = My "Company" B

                      ?sql_lookup("::name::conn","company","id=2","name")
                      = My "Company" B
