Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filtering a Listbox in XDialog

    Sorry for double posting.
I did post this question under a different headline but did not get an answer.

Basically I have a dialog with a browse and I filter this browse by two variables kind of like this : (simplyfied)

    filter = left(fname,1)="j" .and. left(lname,1)="b"

The browse shows all "John Bakers" and "Jim Browns".

If I do the same with a listbox inside of a XDialog, only the first part of the filter is reckognized so I am getting all John and Jeffs with ANY lastname.

How do you filter a listbox with by two variables or is this not possible?

    Thanks

    Eriks

Re: Filtering a Listbox in XDialog

        Hi Mike,

could not resist to look more into it tonight and unfortunately that is exatcly what I have working: A browse inside of a form.

I would like though a XDIALOG with a listview that does the same.

I have attached my code that does NOT filter correctly.

        Again, thanks for your help

Re: Filtering a Listbox in XDialog

          Ericks,
You presented very "overweight" code that I guess is generated by action scripting. It is decipherable by very, very few people, and certainly not me. I have migrated to far simpler and more workable code than the code generated by listview action scripting.

I believe what you are describing might fall under the heading of progressive lookups. I have posted many examples of progressive lookups. Do an advance search on the message board for "progressive" and mike wilson and you should find several examples. Some deal with the listview code, but the newer ones are far simpler code.

Or share what the name of your table you wished searched, what you are searching for, and why you are using two parameters (first initial of first name and first initial of last name) and I can generate another example for you.

            Hi Mike

you are correct, the code is created by the XDialog genie.

I appreciate your offer to give my another example.

You can use your database example that is fine.

Basically I need a XDIALOG record list example where the record list can be filtered by two parameters, for instance first letter of last name and first letter of first name.
(Just like your other example you sent to me. but created as XDIALOG.

            Thank you very much.

              Mike

              another comment.
I have read (and originally started with) the progressive search articles in this forum and I could not find one that deals with two variables to search for.

Again, my idea is to have a firstname field where the user types in a few letters to get all "Johns" lets say and then TABs into the lastname
field narrowing down the choices shown in the record list control.

But regardless what I tried so far, the XDialog record list box only let's me filter by one variable, (and ignores the other), unlike a browse where everything works fine.

This falls into a quite different and unusual requests. Most key on the last name to search for a last name. I'm certain it can be done, let me work on it tomorrow morning.

                  Mike,

again I really appreciate any help. Don't worry about any progressive search.
The bottom line question is " how do I filter a record list box in XDialog by two parameters ( fields).

                  Thanks

                      Hi Mike,

                      very sneaky !

So, it seems that there is no way to filter the record list box directly by two parameters.
But filtering the strings is just fine.

Thanks for your night shift ! I will look at it in detail tonight.

OK, didn't like that one.... maybe this one? Test with W and W for first and last names.

                            No I am not drunk....

I like the look-up better because of the progressive display.

What I do not like is the formating of the string list. I would like to display also a phonenumber in the list and it just looks very
"wild" to have the Ed Smiths, with the Roberto Attenbourrows, when there are no columns for fisrtname and lastname.

I will try to add some <TAB> into the string, I am not sure if this might help.

                            Thanks

remove the alltrims, use courier font (equal spaced characteres), and add the phone.
